Celia E. Kavaler
Celia E. Kavaler, 85, of West Hartford, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of the late Alvin, her devoted husband of 47 years, for whom she provided extraordinary care during his prolonged medical challenges. Her determination and devotion added years and pleasure to their lives together, and is an enduring reflection of the incomparable love they shared. She cared deeply for family and friends, and dealt with adversities head-on throughout her life.

Celia was born in Herne, Germany on June 24, 1932, the cherished daughter of the late Bernard and Selma Bergwerk, and immigrated to New York City with her family when she was 7 years old. She attended public schools in Laurelton and Forest Hills, NY; Forest Hills High School and Queens College.

She worked as a paraprofessional in the New York City public schools, floor supervisor for Sage-Allen department store in Hartford, and as a department manager at Liggett Suburban Pharmacy in West Hartford for two decades. She is warmly remembered by former co-workers and customers for her personal touch, which she first learned while assisting in her father’s retail business in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. She lived in West Hartford with her family for the past 45 years.

Celia is survived by her children, Bernard and his wife, Beth, of West Hartford; Susan and her husband, Edward Schwartz, of White Plains, NY; and cherished grandchildren David (and wife Krista), Michael (and wife Ester), Matthew (and Alyssa), Scott and Robert. Her grandchildren were the recipients of special affection, and she would always find a way to explain, teach or share a lasting life lesson.

A longtime member of Emanuel Synagogue, she drew tremendous enjoyment from the celebration of holiday observances that brought family together to maintain traditions and create lasting memories.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at Hamilton Heights, Masonicare and Stay at Home Care for their compassionate care. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 23 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow at the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield.

Shiva will be observed at her son’s home on Friday afternoon, Saturday evening and Sunday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Emanuel Synagogue or Beth El Temple (West Hartford), or a charity of your choice.
