David Silverman
David Silverman, 93, of West Hartford, died on May 4th, 2018. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Elise (Eilenberg). David was born in Bronx, New York. In 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy where he was stationed on the USS Oklahoma City. In 1944, he embarked on Japanese soil and was a eyewitness to the consequences of war. Upon return to New York, he was employed by the United Jewish Appeal of NY. After he married the love of his life in 1955, he moved to NJ and worked for the UJA of Essex County. David was the ultimate people person, and came to know everything about the Jewish community he served. He retired at age 72 from the larger Metro West Federation of NJ, where he was the Director of Professional Gifts. He proudly shared his experience soliciting the first million dollar gift during Israel’s Six-Day war campaign.

Shortly after retiring, David and Elise moved to West Hartford to be closer to family. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s dance recitals, school plays, as well as spending holidays with his family. He had a great sense of humor to the very end. Three years ago, he traveled to California to attend his youngest grandchild’s Bat Mitzvah. He was so happy to be there. Last year, he proudly attended his oldest grandchild’s college graduation.

David loved his family beyond words. Besides his wife Elise, of blessed memory, he leaves his daughter, Dr. Sheila Silverman, and granddaughters Shira and Talia Feldman, of West Hartford, and his son, Marvin Silverman, wife Allison Levi, and grandchildren Zachary and Gabrielle Silverman of El Granada, California.

David was a member of the Emanuel Synagogue of West Hartford and attended services weekly, where he was embraced by his larger Emanuel Synagogue family. Funeral services will be on Monday, May 7th, at 1 pm at the Emanuel Synagogue, followed by internment at the Emanuel cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the home of Dr. Sheila Silverman. Memorial donations can be made to the Emanuel Synagogue Silverman Family Endowment Fund, the Jewish Federation, or the Solomon Schechter Day School Scholarship Fund
