Florence Land Carples
Florence Land Carples, born July 1, 1925, passed away peacefully in her Delray Beach home alongside her long-time caregiver Lucy Simon on Sunday, April 19, 2020. She was proceeded in death by her beloved parents Hyman and Rose Land, her husband Charles Carples, son Jeffrey Carples and her sisters Marion Dodd and Ruth Sachner. Her lasting legacy is her family: son David Carples (Amy Snyder), son Steven Carples (Joan Carples), Richard Orient, grandson Jeremy Carples (Julia McLean Carples), grandson Matthew Carples (Monique Lloyd) and great grandson Casper Carples.

Raised in Bristol, Connecticut, Fussie as she was known by all, graduated from Syracuse University and enjoyed an early career in Retail. She was an Assistant Buyer at G. Fox & Company when she married Charlie, and then helped launch Casual Corner with him and the Vogel partners as a front line sales associate. Most noteworthy was Fussie’s ongoing dedication to her friends and family which she raised in West Hartford. She loved everyone she met, and was loved by all.

Fussie had a strong appreciation for community and charitable giving. She was a life member of Mount Sinai Hospital, the Institute of Living, Haddassah and the Jewish Federations of both Greater Hartford and Palm Beach County as a Lion of Judah. She was also a long-time member of Temple Beth Israel, and a benefactor of Goodspeed and other theaters. She actively enjoyed golf and bridge at Tumblebrook and St. Andrews Country Clubs. In addition, she had a passion for antiquing, and a creative streak that took form over the years in her painting, skit and ditty composition for the Casual Corner profit sharing breakfasts, needlepointing, and house decorating.

In her later years, Fussie lived full time at Harbour’s Edge in Delray Beach, Florida. There, she developed close friendships and enjoyed Friday night dinners with “the girls”. Fussie will forever be remembered for her infectious smile. She made people feel important and welcome, and would like to be remembered for inspiring people to “be nice to each other.” Fussie was one of a kind, and a gift to us all. The family asks that all donations be directed to the Florence & Charles Carples Endowment Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford.
