Etta Weiner Suisman, 107, of West Hartford, passed away on June 22 at Duncaster in Bloomfield. She was born October 1, 1905 in Hartford, the daughter of Max and Anna Weiner and youngest of six children. She met the late Edward A. Suisman when he was a freshman at Yale and they married in 1927 at Tumble Brook Country Club. “Eddie and Eddy,” as they were often known, had three sons, Michael (husband of Elsa), Richard (husband of Ingrid), and John (husband of Kathy). Etta had 13 grandchildren (Joy, Doug, Charlie, Sherry, David, Lisa, Carolyn, Stacey, Jennifer, Kate, Maggie, James and Jacqueline and 19 great-grandchildren. She was a constant and much-loved presence in the lives of the Suisman family. After her children were grown, Etta and her husband divided their time between West Hartford and Palm Springs, CA. Etta was a great beauty. She traveled widely, read avidly, won the club golf championship many times, solved crossword puzzles, stockpiled See’s candy, listened to Sinatra and Mozart (in that order). She taught her family the importance of curiosity, respect, and of humor. She told great stories. Etta and her husband were quiet but substantial philanthropists and in the course of supporting organizations such as the Hebrew Home for the Aged, the Hartford Jewish Federation, and Hartford and Mt. Sinai Hospitals met many world leaders. Though her friends were many, Etta remained devoted to her family above all else. The family would like to thank Lucretia Grant, Hildoria (Mills) Locke, and Beverly Morris, as well as the staff of Caleb Hitchcock, for their excellent care in her final days.
Funeral services are private but the family welcomes friends at 48 Orchard Road from 2:30-6 p.m. on Monday, June 24. Weinstein Mortuary is entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duncaster Foundation, 40 Loeffler Rd., Bloomfield, CT 06002 or to a charity of the donor’s choice .
