Aaron Shakun, 88, of West Hartford, husband of 63 years to Florence (Weisman) Shakun, died Sunday, March 16, 2014. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Hyman and Betty Shakun.
He was a graduate of Brooklyn College and was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines. Before he retired, Aaron was associated with several construction and real estate management firms. For many years, he worked for Beckenstein Enterprises of East Hartford. He also served as the President of the National Association of Credit Managers – Hartford Division and was a National Director of the organization. He was also a Director of the Hartford Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Jewish War Veterans and the Regents of West Hartford. He was also an active member of the Beth El Temple for more than fifty years.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Harlan and his wife Mary Anne of Bloomfield, Marshall and his wife Laurie of West Hartford and Mitchell and his wife Beth of West Hartford. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Eric Shakun and his wife Sandra of Englewood, NJ, Melissa Shakun Unger and her husband Michael of New York, Bryce Steadman of Seattle, WA, Kylie Steadman of Richmond, VA, Lisa Shakun of Windsor, Matthew Shakun of West Hartford, Jeremy Shakun, Max Shakun and Lilly Shakun, all of West Hartford and two great-grandchildren, Misha and Ashton Shakun of Englewood, NJ. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who always doted on their Uncle Aaron. He is also survived by his brother, Wallace and his wife Gloria Shakun of Indiana.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 1:30PM in the sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117 with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Jackson St. Ext., Avon, CT. Following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at 174 Brewster Road in West Hartford through Wednesday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beth El Temple or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 659 Tower Avenue, Hartford, CT 06112-1269.
