WIENER, Alvin ?Al? Wiener, 78, of West Hartford, husband of Bernice (Smitman) Wiener, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at the Hebrew Home & Hospital after a brief stay in the hospice unit. Born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Edward H. and Freda (Roth) Wiener, he grew up in New Britain. Al was a corporal in the US Army and served as a medic in Korea where he was presented ?The Soldier?s Metal? for heroism, the highest non-combat award. He graduated from the University of Connecticut. Al was president of Regal Supply in West Hartford, retiring in 2002. He was a member of Beth El Temple of West Hartford and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Hartford. Besides his wife he leaves his daughter, Debbie Freesman and her husband Steven of Closter, NJ; three grandchildren, Michele, Gabrielle and Adam Freesman; his brother Donald Wiener of Somerset, MA; his sister, Karen Putterman of Port Townsend, WA; his cousin, Judi Bronstein of Brooklyn, NY; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cookie and Victor Berman of East Hartford. The family wishes to thank all who were involved in Al?s care, especially Florence and Shadeen, who cared for him at home, the nurses and staff at McLean Hospice and the staff at the medical/hospital unit at Hebrew Health Care. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 6, 2008 at 10:00 am in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Ilana Garber officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon. A memorial period will be observed at his home Sunday following the funeral, Monday and Tuesday 1-4 pm and 6:30-9 pm.
