Alvin I

Friedman

Obituary

Alvin I Friedman passed away peacefully on March 10, 2021. Al was born and raised in Hartford, CT. For over 60 years, he was a West Hartford resident and loved his community, where he raised his family and grew his business. He was the beloved husband of the late Beth (Golemba) Friedman. Al adored his beautiful, kind and funny wife for over 50 years of marriage. Born in Hartford on January 12, 1928, he was the son of Barney and Anna (Wallad) Friedman. Al graduated Weaver High School and University of Connecticut. He was a WWII army veteran and was honored with the WW II Victory Medal. Al was the owner of Harmac, a men’s clothing store at Bishops Corner in West Hartford for 35 Years. His customers quickly became some of his closest friends, striking up many enjoyable conversations. Al was like the mayor of West Hartford, practically knowing everyone in town, fitting customers from their childhood to proms to weddings. Everyone loved getting to know sweet Al. After retiring in 1991, Al enjoyed travelling with his loving wife Beth, spending time with Beth’s sister and husband, Joan and Bill Reider in Florida, playing golf with his buddies at Cliffside Golf Club and especially loved spending time visiting his two daughters, their husbands and four cherished grandchildren. He was also an avid UCONN basketball fan and spent many hours with Beth cheering on their Huskies. Al enjoyed his daily mall walks where he met many nice friends to share a coffee and walk together. Al was also an active member of the Regents Club, a local mens group that offered monthly speakers and socialization for retired professionals. He will be missed tremendously by all who knew him. Al’s life was his family and he was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. He is survived by his daughters Amy Amaru of Bethel, CT, Tina Torman and her husband Hal of Reading, MA, dearest sister-in-law Claire Friedman of West Hartford, four cherished grandchildren; Emily Torman and Jennifer Torman of Philadelphia, PA, Alex Amaru of Newtown, CT and Alana Amaru of Bethel, CT., and loving nieces and nephews Andrea, Bruce, Susan, Richard, Kenneth, Lynda and their spouses and children who he adored and were such an important part of his life. Al was predeceased by his dearest wife Beth Friedman, beloved son-in-law Joseph Amaru, brother Max Friedman, sister Pearl Gellin and her husband Samuel, sister Roz Fishberg and sister and brother in law, Joan and Bill Reider. The family expresses a heartfelt appreciation for the loving, compassionate and superb care provided by Al’s caregiver, Danuta, and all the wonderful staff at Brookdale Chatfield in West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, donations in Al’s memory may be made to VA Connecticut, Voluntary Service (135), 555 Willard Ave., Newington, CT 06111 or the charity of your choice. Dear Amy, Tina, and family, Please accept our deepest condolences on the death of your beloved Father and Grandfather. He was one of my Mom's first cousins (Anne Clare Kramer). There were many first cousins in the Clare, Wolf, Styler, Gellin, Fishberg ,and Friedman families and your Dad was one of the youngest. Mom had so many wonderful memories of growing up in the Hartford area with these cousins who were more like siblings than cousins. We remember your Mom and Dad coming to our wedding and I always thought that they were quite the handsome and sweet couple. May the wonderful memories that you have of your beloved Dad and Grandfather sustain you at this most difficult time. Carol and Paul Leiman

Dear Amy and Tina,
You two don’t know me but I had to tell you how sorry we were to hear about your Dad’s passing. My husband Michael shopped at Harmacs since he was a little boy. His Mother took him shopping back then but then when we were married in 1976 I woukd go in with him. Your Dad was always so welcoming to us and we always loved talking to him in the store about everything. He was such a nice man. If he had to do any alterations he would stay as long as he needed to do Michael would have what he needed. My husband always waited until the last minute but your Dad always came through. With Harmacs so close by and such a nice small store like that, it sure beat going to a mall. The service your Dad extended to everyone it coukdnt be beat. We will always have wonderful memories of your Dad with smiles remembering his warm and friendly way about him. May his memory be for a blessing. Shelley and Michael Levy .

A truly fine man. He treated me like royalty when I shopped at Harmac’s beginning at age 13. He made a difference in so many lives.

Dear Amy, Tina and families. I am so sorry for your great loss. I first met Al in the mid 1960s. We played golf together countless times and had lunch together even more times. During the past 12 months, every time we spoke on the phone, Al couldn’t wait for the time when I would be able to come to Brookdale to be his guest for lunch. I shall truly miss him. He was a great guy, and great friend to so many. May his memory bring you joy.

I am so sorry for your loss. I've known him my whole life through his connection to my dad. Every time I think of Al, I see him with a big smile on his face. I hope memories of that smile will bring comfort to your family through this sad time. He was a great guy.
