Obituary

Benjamin J. Shapiro, 85 years of age, of West Hartford, died Friday, February 12, 2016. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mollie (Sack) Shapiro. He graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford, received a B.A. degree from the University of CT, and earned an M.B.A. at the Wharton School in accounting and finance. Ben served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He became a registered representative with Sherson Hammill prior to becoming a trust officer and a vice president at the former CT Bank and Trust. Ben was a member of the Old Guard, and Congregation Beth Israel of West Hartford. He loved tennis, was an avid reader, and scrabble player with his wife Joan. Ben was a most warm, devoted and humble husband, father and grandfather. He leaves his beloved wife of 53 years, Joan (Hyde) Shapiro; his daughters, Suzanne Shapiro and her husband Robert Wilkanowski of Long Island City, NY, and Pamela Shapiro of West Hartford; his sister, Kathryn Rubin of West Hartford; and his grandson, Joseph Wilkanowski. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. Interment will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery, Affleck St., Hartford. Following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at his home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., West Hartford 06119 or to Hartford Hospital Fund Development, 80 Seymour St., P.O.
