Bryna Swerdloff Cipes, 91, of Somers, NY died peacefully on January 28, 2011 knowing she had loved and was loved. She was the devoted wife of the late Dr. Paul L. Cipes for 67 years. Strong willed and full of life, Bryna was welcome in any golf foursome thanks to her uncanny skill on the greens and respect for the Rules of the Game. She was a fierce and loyal friend. She was also a consummate homemaker who created a warm and loving home for her family and friends. Bryna was born in Buffalo, New York, the youngest of the four children of Jesse and Lena (Simon) Swerdloff. She met her future husband when he rented a room from her parents while attending dental school at the University of Buffalo. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps as a dentist and they were married in November of 1942. They lived in Mississippi and Georgia before he was sent to England and France. She returned to Buffalo and worked at the Munitions Depot during the war. Upon his return, they took a three month road trip to Mexico, ran out of money, and returned to Mt. Vernon, New York where he opened his practice. They moved to Eastchester, NY in 1957 and lived there until 1994 when they moved to Heritage Hills. They shared a love of art, music, ballet and opera. They also shared a love for their family, travel, and the game of golf. Bryna is survived by her sons Joel Cipes and his wife, Susan Devlin of Norwalk; and Jonathan Cipes and his wife Kathye of West Hartford. She doted on her three grandchildren: Benjamin and wife Julie Cipes of West Hartford; Dr. Elizabeth Cipes Chisholm and husband Michael Chisholm of Sturbridge, MA; and Emily Cipes of Hartford. She also leaves nephews David Swerdloff, of Stamford, CT, Mark Swerdloff of Farmington, CT, and Steven Cipes of Kelowna, British Columbia and niece Carol Nadell Van Deusen of New York City. A private graveside ceremony for family will be held at Sharon Gardens Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. A celebration of her life will be held on a sunny August day on a golf course.
