Calvin

Aarons

Obituary

Below is the obituary of my Uncle, Calvin Aarons.

Thank you,

Marci Silverhart

Calvin Aarons of Newington entered into eternal rest on September 1, 2018 at his home in Newington, CT at the age of 83 years old.

Calvin was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Philip and Shirley (nee Kwartler) Aarons. He attended PS 222, James Madison High School and Brooklyn College. After serving four years in the US Navy in Morocco, Washington DC, and aboard the USS Pocono, he attended and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a BS in Education.

Calvin was an elementary school teacher in Hartford for 31 years. He taught at the Arsenal Annex, Moylan, McDonough and Batchelder schools. While teaching, he furthered his education and earned a M.Ed. at the University of Hartford, and a Sixth Year Degree at CCSU. He also taught Sunday school at Beth Israel Synagogue.

He was an avid traveler. He also was the Greater Hartford Community Ambassador to Poland and the Soviet Union in 1964.

After his retirement he did volunteer work for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and was recognized as volunteer of the year. During this period he was a frequent visitor to Foxwoods and Mohegan Casinos. He loved the slot machines, particularly the one cent slots.

He leaves his brother Howell and his wife Trudy, four nieces, Beth and her husband Irv Sugerman, Wendy Aarons, Ellen and her husband Mark Kiely, Marci and her husband Todd Silverhart. In addition he leaves seven grand nephews, two grand nieces, one great-grandniece and one great- grandnephew.

He wants to remember his close friends, Del Menard, Helene Frost, Norman Hanenbaum, Henry and Judy Haddad, Brendan Sheehan, Maxine Sullivan, Lou Treviso, Billie Jo Kepler, Sandy Hersey, Gloria Intravia, Rudy and Rosemary Urgiel, Scott and Chris Tucker, Mark Hopkins and former students Lisa Bobak and Patricia Niederhauser and her husband Peter, and his college roommate Joe Benigno and his wife Sharon. This also includes any friends he may have inadvertently not included.

Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at 20 Batterson Park Road, Farmington CT 06032.

Burial service with immediate family will be held at Mount Ararat Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y. (Long Island) at the place wherein his beloved parents lie. Weinstein’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive those wanting to pay their respects at the home of Marci and Todd Silverhart in West Hartford, on Saturday, September 8, from 6:30-9:00 pm.

Mr. Aarons, you were truly one of my favorite teachers. I learned compassion and respect for all people from you. May you Rest In Peace, maybe I will get to be in your class again when I get to the “other side”.
