Calvin

Mass

Obituary

Calvin Mass D.D.S. died peacefully on Friday, June 13 at the age of 96. He was the husband of the late Helen (Shlaifer) Mass and the son of the late Louis and Rose (Gold) Mass. He leaves his son, Dr. Martin Mass, and wife, Jill, of South Glastonbury; his daughter, Nan Kristt, of Monticello, NY; his four grandchildren: Noah Mass and wife Nicole, Gabriel Mass, Dara Hebert and husband Thomas, and Eric Kristt; and his great-granddaughter, Sophia Mass. He also leaves a large and loving family of generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Samuel Mass and Sidney Mass, and by his sister, Elizabeth Lewis. Calvin was born in Hartford and graduated from Weaver High School, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Maryland Dental School. He did post-graduate studies in Toronto, Canada and was a fellow of the American Academy of General Dentistry. He served in World War II as a captain in the United States Army Air Force Dental Corps. He practiced dentistry in Hartford for 37 years, until 1983, and worked as a Dental Consultant for Aetna Life and Casualty until 1995. He was past president of both the Hartford Dental Society and Beth David Synagogue in West Hartford. In the 1950s Dr. Mass was curator and librarian of the Hartford Dental Society Library; in the 1960s and 70s he helped develop and lecture at the A. I. Prince Dental Assistant Course. Prior to joining Aetna, where he wrote the first dental quality of care manual, he was chairman of the Hartford Dental Society Peer Review Committee and served on the Quality of Care Committee at the University of Connecticut Medical/Dental School. Calvin loved and enjoyed life and he loved and enjoyed his family and friends. He was a marvelous teller of stories and remembered every joke he ever heard. He was interested in and kind to everyone. Even into his 90’s he had a laugh that sparkled. Everyone admired him and he admired everyone. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Monday June 16 in the sanctuary of Beth David Synagogue, 20 Dover Road, West Hartford, with Rabbi Yitzchok Adler officiating. Interment will follow at Beth David Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield. A post-interment reception will be held at the Beth David Synagogue. The family will also receive friends at the home of Martin and Jill Mass, 33 Southpond Road, South Glastonbury, on Monday night from 7PM to 9PM and on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 6:30PM to 8:30PM, with an evening service at 8PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Noah and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Clearly your grandfather was very special to you and to so many people. I hope you find joy in knowing that you gave him a very special gift...a great-granddaughter! Children are the greatest gift of all!

Dear Marty and Nan,

When I was in college I worked for your Dad for several summers in the mid 1970's. I could hardly believe that he would even hire me, a barely 20 something with no dental experience, but he did! I can honestly say the best job I ever had as a kid was working for your dad. Please accept my most heartfelt condolences.

Dr. Cal was an inspirtion to many of us at The McAuley.

Among my favorite memories are his sharing his poetry which revealed his delightful sense of humor and love of life. I discovered him occasionally "parked" in his wheel chair between cars-- praying! It was evident to me that his faith was very much alive and very important to him.

Dr. Martin Mass & family,

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your father. I was a patient of his for some 25 years. From when I was a kid until he retired and his practice was taken over by Dr. Gelb. He was a great man and dentist. I missed being a patient of his and again want to offer my deepest sympathy.

Dr. Mass was my dentist as a child up to my teenage years on Gillette St in Hartford. I have never been afraid to go to the dentist due to Dr. Mass; I actually looked forward to it. I loved seeing him and hearing his jokes, watching him swing between the dental chair and the counter...he would ask me questions while working on my mouth and tell me to close my right eye for yes and left eye for no. I have such fond memories of Dr. Mass...he was and always will be my favorite dentist.

I am a friend of Calvin's granddaughter Dara Kristt Hebert. Calvin was a magnificent man. He was intelligent, kind, inclusive, and an incredible story teller! And above all, he was a gentleman. He always greeted me with a smile, a joke, or story. I will never forget when Dara asked him to show me his hat book. What a collection of photos! It is no wonder why Dara is also such an incredible person. I feel blessed to have met Calvin and I will remember him fondly. I send my condolences to Dara, Eric, and Nan Kristt and the rest of Calvin's family. I saw how proud he was of Dara at her law school graduation and I also knew how excited he was for Dara and Tom Hebert's recent wedding where he made a surprise "appearance" via video. Calvin was one-of-a-kind and he will be missed by many, including me.
