Debra “Gussie” Goldberg Elansky, 93, of West Hartford died peacefully Tuesday, November 5, 2013 with her loved ones by her side. Born to Ida and Arthur Goldberg on May 3, 1920 in Holyoke, Mass. she was the third of four loving siblings. Dora and Martin predeceased her leaving Sadye Haber of Seagate, Brooklyn to carry on. Gussie was married 56 years to the love of her life Carl. He passed away in 1997. Together they grew Mutual Oil Company into a well-respected family business. She handled both “the books” and answered the phones….often giving customers a “cheerful earful”. Customers became friends. Gussie drove her beloved silver Cadillac to work every day well into her mid 80’s. She so looked forward to Thursdays at the hairdresser, with Janet keeping her blond for fifty loyal years! Gussie was the beloved mother and mother in law of David and Gail Gillman Elansky of Avon. She also leaves Steven and Maxine Elansky of South Windsor. “Bubbie” was an exemplary, giving, loving, supportive grandmother to both Michael Elansky of NYC and Matthew Elansky of Boston, MA. Aunt Gussie was the all-time favorite to generations of special nieces and nephews from California to CT with whom she kept in constant touch, sharing each milestone in their lives. A heartfelt thank you to some very special people; Shirley, Thelma, Sandy, Karen, Susie and the devoted caregivers at both Brookdale Place and The Reservoir in West Hartford. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 10th at 11a.m. at Weinstein’s Mortuary. Burial will follow at Hartford Mutual Cemetery in East Granby. Shiva will be held at Gail and David’s home in Avon following the services and on Monday from 2:00pm-4:00pm and from 7:00pm-9:00pm.
