Glassman

Obituary

Edwina ‘Winnie’ (Wellins) Glassman, a very wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother, 72 years of age, of Sarasota, FL passed away peacefully with those she loved at her side on Sunday, September 16, 2012. Winnie was the beloved wife of Gerald Glassman for almost 49 years. Born in Guilford, CT to Merwin and Bella (Kaplowitz) Wellins, she went through school in the New Haven area. She graduated from The University of Connecticut with a degree in elementary education and received her Masters Degree from Central Connecticut State University. She taught second grade in the New Britain School System.

Besides her husband and best friend, she leaves three children, Cynthia Heilweil (Howard) of Franklin, MA, Barbara Glassman Dell (Robert, PhD) of West Hartford, CT, and Richard Glassman, AIA, of Marietta, GA; three grandchildren, Sarah and Adam Heilweil and Gabriel Dell; and her brother, Neal Wellins (Christine) of Cheshire, CT.

Winnie was a past president and life member of the Hartford Chapter of Jewish Women International, a life member of Hadassah, a member of Encore of Avon, the Garden Club of Avon and Brandeis University Women. She was a member of the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation-Emek Shalom in Simsbury, CT. Additionally, she was a member of The Golf Club of Avon and The Meadows Country Club of Sarasota. An avid reader, she was a member of several book clubs in those same areas. She loved travel and had the good fortune to set foot on all the continents of the world. She also spent 30 wonderful summers at her summer residence at Ballymeade on Cape Cod.

Funeral services will be held at 10:45 am on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 in the Sanctuary of Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation-Emek Shalom, 55 Bushy Hill Rd., Simsbury with Rabbi Howard Herman officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, Wolcott Rd., East Granby. Immediately following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at a luncheon at The Golf Club of Avon, 160 Country Club Rd., Avon, CT, and also at 2 Abbottsford, Hunters Run, Avon that evening. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Mark Dailey for his friendship and dedicated care. A most sincere thanks goes out to Seantel Alphonso for two years of very loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center, Department of Oncology, 80 Seymour St., P.O. Box 5037, Hartford, CT 06102. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford. For further information, directions, or to sign the guest book for Edwina, please visit online at www.weinsteinmortuary.com/funerals.cfm.

Jerry, Cindy, Barbara and Rick: I loved your mom with all my heart. She was one of a kind. I can still hear infectious laugh. She could always lift you up when you were down and had a sense of style like no one else I have ever known. She was a very special lady and will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you. May you find peace in knowing she is with God laughing and free from pain and sickness. May God's never ending love surround during this time of sorrow. My love to all of you, Rhonda

My deepest sympathy to Winnie's husband and whole family. We had a common interest in B'Nai Brith since I too am a past president, only of ASA. She worked very hard and kept the chapter alive in the community for many years. She filled in for so many through the years.

She will be deeply missed.
