Obituary

Edythe Gersten-Scott passed away peacefully after a long illness on Sunday, October 4, 2015. Edythe was born in Simsbury, Connecticut, to the late Samuel and Celia Kaufman Gersten. Edythe graduated from Simsbury High School, Hartford College for Woman and Goucher College. Edythe spent her working career in New York and Boston. While in New York she worked for several advertising agencies and Elmer Roper, an important pollster. In Boston she was employed at Massachusetts General Hospital. Edythe was a world traveler and enjoyed many vacations abroad. Edythe was a former member of Temple Emanuel of New York and Congregation Beth Israel of West Hartford. While in New York, Edythe participated in Temple Emanuel’s Social Action programs making sandwich lunches for the homeless and tutoring in under served schools. She is survived by her brother Aaron Gersten and his wife Sandra of West Hartford and sister Minnie Sandick of Lakewood, New Jersey. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Edythe was predeceased by her brothers Joseph, Maurice, Charles, Harold and Raymond and sisters, Sally Spurr, Dora Bailey, Esther Spiegelman, Ann Goldfield, Ruth Rome and Ethel Liss. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Mrs. Minnie Pierce and Mrs. Margaret Cunningham and the staff at Saint Mary’s Home for their devoted care of Edythe. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 9th in the Silberman Chapel of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. Interment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield. Following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at the Town and County Club, 22 Woodland Street, Hartford 06105. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Congregation Beth Israel.
