Eleanor "Ellie"

Klau

Obituary

Eleanor Klau “Ellie”, 81, formerly of Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD, died March 26, 2021 in Rockville, MD. Born in Hartford, CT, she was the daughter of Judge Joseph and Sadie (Palten) Klau. After graduating from Russell Sage College, she received a master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from Boston University and a doctorate from the University of Maryland. Dr. Klau served as the director of Community Services for the Tri-Services National Institute of Dyslexia, now the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and served as an associate professor on the faculty of Coppin State University in Baltimore MD. In 1993, she was recognized for her many contributions to her profession with an award from Boston University for her “Outstanding Career in the Field of Social Work.” Respected and beloved by students and colleagues, she once wrote “My first passion and the foundation of my career has always been my need to be of service and that the service be of high quality.” Dr. Klau had a decades-long interest in creative problem-solving; her doctoral dissertation was on the application of creative problem-solving to the practice of social work. She is survived by her twin sister, Ruth Klau Sachs (Daniel) of Silver Spring MD, her brother David Klau (Barbara) of West Hartford CT, and many nieces and nephews. Her older brother, Arnold Klau, and sister-in-law, Margaret Klau, predeceased her. A private funeral will be held in East Granby CT. Funeral arrangements: Weinstein Mortuary of West Hartford CT.

Dear David, Ruth and extended Klau family. My first exposure to Ellie was as one of the Klau twins in my Emanuel Synagogue Sunday School classes. She was always one of the smartest in the class. Sandy and I send our condolences to the entire Klau family on yet another great loss.
