Elliot

Ginsberg

Obituary

With deepest sorrow, Elliot Ginsberg, 73, passed away peacefully at home on May 12th, with his loving wife, Lorie, by his side. Son of Maurice and Ida Ginsberg of blessed memory, Elliot was born in Hartford on July 2, 1947. His life was a living example of his favorite verse from Micah, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God”. A beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, Elliot was known for his devotion to social justice, his generosity and his compassion for those less fortunate. He was a loyal and trusted friend and colleague, devoting himself to public service. Elliot was a lover of life and enjoyed world travel with Lorie, his wife of 26 years. He cherished family get togethers and time spent with friends on the beaches of Rhode Island, the Jersey shore and the lakes of Connecticut and Vermont. He loved a good party and was well known for his dance moves. Before his retirement in 2018, Elliot served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology in East Hartford . Prior to this he proudly served for 10 years as Chief of Staff to Congressman John Larson, a lifelong friend and “brother”. Elliot’s career in public service was extraordinary. He began as a young attorney for Connecticut Legal Services in New Britain , later serving as its Senior Manager and Executive Director of the Training and Advocacy Program. He stood in the corridors of the State Capital working as a lobbyist and was known as relentless and persuasive, and capable of bringing opposing sides together. At age 39, he was appointed by Governor William A. O’Neill as Commissioner of the State Department of Human Resources, where , through his visionary leadership, he created and drove initiatives for homelessness, elderly and disability services, AIDS residences and child support enforcement. He was then appointed as a Family Support Magistrate for the Connecticut Judicial branch, where he served for 6 years. Elliot always answered the call to serve on commissions and non-profit boards; he was especially proud of his work with Oak Hill and the Charter Oak Cultural Center. A graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and the University of Connecticut School of Law, he was always ready to share a story about his time as a medic in the U.S. Army Reserves. Besides his wife, Lorie Sedor, Elliot leaves his son, Matthew Ginsberg of West Hartford, his sister Barbara Jones and her husband, Mark, from Florida, a niece, Maura Woods and her husband Dana and their daughter, Riley, of Cromwell, CT., his cousins Ellen and Neal Litinger of New Jersey, Robert and Beverly Smith of South Windsor , CT, and Steven and Carey Smith of Florida, and his many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Elliot’s family is incredibly grateful for the many acts of kindness and support shown during his illness, especially by his lifelong friends, Bill and Sheryl Breetz, and John Carson, and Dr. Felice and the team at the Hospital for Special Care, and the nurses at Starling Infusion Center, Rocky Hill. A special thanks to his personal caregiver, Stephanie, who was at his side making him smile and easing his journey. Elliot will be remembered for his kind heart and generosity, and would want us to remember to treasure the time we have, and to love fully and be loved. Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford. For further information or to sign the guestbook for Elliot, please visit online at www.weinsteinmortuary.com/funerals.cfm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the ALS Association, Connecticut Chapter, 4 Oxford Road, Unit E4, Milford, CT or consider performing a random act of kindness. To Elliott’s family, I was very sorry to hear about his passing. As his hairstylist for over 40 years, I always enjoyed our visits. We shared family stories, life events and much humor. He was a very thoughtful and compassionate person who was very supportive of me during my health crisis. I will miss him very much and will never forget him. My deepest sympathy on your loss.

Elliot will be missed by all who knew him. He was a dedicated public servant for decades, a friend to a wide range of people, and a man with a deep commitment to bettering the world. Besides, you couldn’t help enjoying his mischievous grin and his ready recognition of life’s absurdities. May his memory forever warm the hearts of Lorie, the rest of his family, and his friends.

Elliot was extraordinarily kind to me - he would patiently answer my many questions about the workings of government and he'd let me know who I needed to speak with about which issues - he went far in helping me grow as a reporter with great interest in politics. I'll remember him fondly and always be grateful for his guidance. May he rest in peace.

I am so very sorry to hear of Elliot’s passing, and my heart goes out to Matthew and Lorna especially. I didn’t know much about Elliot from a professional perspective, because I was his families’ personal nanny back in the days that he was working at Legal Aid. Although he would seem quite serious when he first returned home from work, we would always trade smarmy and fresh remarks to each other -- making him laugh was pretty easy, and the furrows in his brow would lighten. Many times he would just look at me and shake his head, and actually say “I’m PAYING you for this?” They had a standard poodle, Bailey, who went blind after a few years, and Elliot would completely crack Matthew and I up when he asked Bailey “how many fingers am I hold up?” He also joked that he should rearrange the furniture! I was honored to work for the Ginsberg’s for several years, and will always remember Elliot with humor and love.

Dear Lori and Matthew, I deeply valued my friendship with Elliot and collaboration as a family support magistrate colleague. He was fair and just and served as a mentor to me and others and protected the magistrate court system fiercely and kindly.
Lori i especially cherish our night out with Elliot and Kirk at toads enjoying Little Richard who played so magnificently and sang his songs with passion and did not want to stop performing. As I recall his staff guided him off the stage as we cheered. We lost little Richard too, I celebrate them both with joy and love,

It was with great sadness that I heard of elliott's death. I first met Elliot and Lorie when he was 39 years old and then Commissioner of the CT Dept. of Human Resources when I was Director of Catholic Charities/Catholic Family Services. I found in him a person who had a strong sense of social justice and a passion for helping those on the margins of our society; the poor, the homeless, the hungry, the disabled, and the disadvantaged. Our paths continue to cross over the years and most recently when he joined the Board of Oak Hill when I was CEO there. Elliot was a visionary leader whose wise counsel I found very helpful over the years. He was passionate and compassionate, creative, kind and loving. He spoke often about his son Matthew and his dear wife Lorie. Although our time together was too infrequent I will always cherish the time we had in this brief time we all have between the two great mysteries. Lorie, please accept my sincere heartfelt condolences.

Elliot and my father were friends for many, many years. Elliot always said that my father was the first person he met when he walked into the Legal Services office in New Britain, CT, ready to start his first job after law school. He and my father watched every Super Bowl together, and from the age of five I joined them for every Super Bowl except for a few when I was off at college. Even after college, the Super Bowl party at Elliot's was always something to look forward to. I know that my father's passing was a heavy loss to Elliot, and Elliot's passing would have been equally heavy to my father. I thank Elliot for all of the generosity he showed me in life. My deepest condolences to Lorie, Matthew, and the many people whose lives were made better by Elliot's kindness.

My deepest sympathies to Elliot's family. He was such wonderful and wise man. I worked with Elliot over the past 15 years on many projects: initiating the CT fuel cell coalition, a series of state programs to support advanced manufacturing, the manufacturing center at Goodwin College, and others. We became good friends and spend hours discussing how best to marshal CT's strengths to promote jobs that working families could live on -- as well as every other topic big and small under the sun. At his retirement send-off, it was remarkable to hear the number of people who saw him as a mentor and good friend. Most of all what drew us all to him was his big heart and extraordinary commitment to a better world.
