Ernest Bernstein, 76, died suddenly on Wednesday evening, January 19, 2011 at Middlesex Hospital. Ernie was born in Germany and was the son of the late Eleazar Bernstein and Martha (Uhlfelder) Bernstein. He was a resident of Old Saybrook, West Hartford, and recently Chester. Ernie graduated in 1952 from Chapman Tech in New London and from Worcester Polytechnic in 1956 and completed his Masters Degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic. His entire career was as a very successful mechanical engineer with United Technologies. He designed and patented the Mobile Pack that is used to supply auxiliary electricity. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara (Goldberg) Bernstein, a daughter Dr. Lori R. Bernstein of Montgomery Village, MD, two grandchildren, Aviva and Elliot, two brothers, Franklin Bernstein of Glastonbury, Ralph Bernstein of Palo Alto, CA, and a sister, Margot Brandes of Fairlawn, NJ. Ernie was a talented private pilot for 26 years, loved boating and fishing, swimming, reading and was a brilliant, kind and caring gentleman. He retired in 1991 and he and his wife were inseparable, spending 24/7 together. Funeral services are Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford. Rabbi Howard Sommer will officiate. Interment will follow at Cypress Cemetery, Old Saybrook with Rabbi Claudio Kogan officiating.
