Fred H. Greenwood, 78, of Kirkwood Road, West Hartford died Monday, October 31, 2005 at Hartford Hospital. Born May 14, 1927 in Vienna, Austria, he was the son of the late Walter and Illona Greenwood. He was on the Kindertransport in December 1938, eventually settling with his family in New York. He was a US Army Veteran. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the City College of New York, 1951, and his Master’s degree from the University of Connecticut, 1958. He worked as an aerospace engineer for 33 years at Hamilton Standard, retiring in 1987, followed by a consulting career in manned space flight with clients both here and abroad. Numerous awards, including the distinguished NASA Public Service Medal, highlighted his engineering career. Fred had many loves including his family and dear friends, children, gardening, classical music, skiing, and world travel. He greatly enjoyed his varied volunteer activities benefiting community children and seniors. He was respected and loved by all who knew him. Fred leaves his beloved wife of 54 years, Eva; his three children and their spouses, Susan Greenwood and Arnie Lucinda Stewart of Jamaica Plain, MA; Jeffrey and Della Greenwood of Simsbury, CT; John and Karen Greenwood of Bellmore, NY; five grandchildren, Sarah, Amanda, Alyssa, and Michael Greenwood, and Elijah Greenwood-Stewart; his sister Hanna and her husband Dr. Walter Tauber of Longmeadow, MA; his dear mother-in-law, Martha Pollenz, of West Hartford, CT; and many loving relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Avenue, West Hartford. The family will receive relatives and friends at 7 Kirkwood Road, West Hartford through Friday afternoon, November 4. The family would like to thank the Hospice and Palliative Care staff at Hartford Hospital for their loving and devoted care extended to Fred.
