Frederic N. Cohen, 61, of Avon, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 14th, surrounded by love. Born in Hartford, CT and proud of it, he had many passions: his family and friends, work, cars, motorcycles, running, music, art, and NYC. As the treasured husband of Holly for 23 years, and the father of Tesandra (a junior at Connecticut College) and Austin (a junior at Avon High School), Fred enjoyed all of life’s experiences. He embraced life – whether climbing to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro with Tes, or taking annual motorcycle trips with Austin, or walking in the neighborhood with Holly. In 2001, he made his dream come true when he bought Millwood Lumber in Millwood, NY. He loved working with everyone at Millwood and also valued the people he worked with at C & S Distributors (the company his father founded), Torrington Supply Company, Castle Building Products, and Jet Supply. In recent years, Fred spoke about how lucky he was to have three families: the warm and supportive family he’s related to; his family of friends who are dear to him; and his Millwood family. In addition to his wife and children, Fred was gently cared for and is survived by his parents Samuel and Ida Cohen of West Hartford; his brother and sister-in-law Mark and Adrienne Cohen of Simsbury; his sister and brother-in-law Janice Cohen and Byron Fisher of West Hartford; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Julie and Dennis Macklin of Manalapan, NJ, as well as his cherished nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a large circle of cousins who were friends, and friends who were like family, all who supported Fred and Holly so unselfishly. We will always remember Fred’s exuberance at every gathering and will smile as we picture him dancing at every party as only Fred could. His sense of humor, wit and integrity will continue to be a source of inspiration to us all. The family wishes to thank the doctors who treated Fred with kindness and compassion: Alexandra Flowers, Andrew Salner, David Kvam and Evan Fox, the nurses and staff at both Hartford Hospital and St. Mary Home, as well as the Connecticut VNA Hospice team. Fred was a member of Beth El Temple, West Hartford, CT. A special note of thanks for their spiritual guidance to Rabbis Philip Lazowski, James Rosen, Ilana Garber, Howard Herman and Steven Kane. Kudos and heartfelt thanks to the “Iron Chefs” who have graciously provided meals to the family for many months. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford with interment following in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon. A memorial period will be observed at the home of Mark and Adrienne Cohen on Thursday from 6-9 PM, Friday 12-4 PM, resuming on Saturday 6-9 PM and Sunday from 2 PM.
