Luftglas

Obituary

Gertrude “Goldie” (Sosin) Luftglas, born May 30, 1932 of West Hartford, CT, passed away October 20th, 2017 after a short illness. She lived in the Hartford area throughout her life. Goldie graduated from Hartford High School in 1950. Goldie was first and foremost a wife and mother. Being a mother meant more to Goldie than anything in the world. Goldie was a strong, loving woman. She raised her 3 daughters and loved and cared for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She took them to lessons, dance class, and everywhere they needed to go while their parents worked. She was a wonderful cook. Especially at the holidays, Goldie cooked up a storm and the house always smelled like a holiday. If anyone ever left Goldie’s house hungry, it was their own fault. Goldie volunteered for the Newington Children’s Hospital School for 10 years. She was an active member of her sisterhood and also ran the synagogue gift shop. Goldie enjoyed her weekly Mah Jong games with friends and was always excited when she won. Goldie was a life member of Hadassah, ORT and Jewish Women International. Roman and Goldie were lifetime members of Temple Beth Hillel of South Windsor CT, and were members of the Emanuel Synagogue of West Hartford. Goldie is survived by her daughters Frieda Luftglas, Elaine Levison and her husband Art, son-in-law Steve Barshay and his wife Janice, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband of 64 years Roman Luftglas (2017), daughter Sharon Luftglas Barshay (1987), and sister Bernice Schwarz (2013). The one message that Goldie wants to share is to treat people with kindness and respect. Services will be held at The Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive West Hartford, CT 06117 at 1:30pm on Sunday October 22nd with Rabbi David J. Small officiating. Interment immediately following at The Emanuel Cemetery 1361 Berlin Turnpike in Wethersfield, CT. Following interment, Shiva with be held at Goldie’s home through Tuesday evening from 1pm to 5 pm and 6:30pm to 9pm. My name is Sandy Goldberg and I first met Goldie at Cardon's hair salon many years ago. We seemed to always be there at the same time and it was delightful to chat with her. She was such a sweet, kind lady with a big smile on her face. One time, soon after Passover, I was telling her about how my sponge cake did not come out very well. She then proudly gave me her 10-10-10 recipe for sponge cake which I cherish to this day. It is on a 3x5 card in my recipe box with her name on it. The next year, when Passover was near, I was in the Crown to buy the ingredients for the cake when I realized that I forgot the recipe card! I panicked and thought that I would call Cardon's and ask Donna for Goldie's telephone number so I could call her and ask her about the ingredients when, lo and behold, I looked up and there was Goldie standing in line at the cash register! I ran over to her, embraced her and told her she was the Passover Miracle because she appeared just when I needed her!! I have never forgotten that day and have told the story many times about Goldie, the Passover Miracle and about Goldie's delicious 10-10-10 Passover Sponge Cake Recipe! I will treasure her memory and her recipe always and think of her when I make it. As I am sure you and your family will always treasure your memories of her as a wonderful mother and cook extraordinaire!

Dear Freda, Elaine and Family,

Our sincerest condolences to you all on Goldie's passing. It's been a hard year for you, having lost your dad so recently, and now your mom. They are together again forever.

Goldie was a very special lady, and a loving and kind friend to all of us whose lives she touched, and we'll miss her very much.
