Herbert Janow, 76, of West Hartford, died Friday, May 20, 2005 at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 14, 1928, in Hartford, to the late Benjamin and Lillian (Tellar) Janow. Herb was a graduate of Weaver High School, and attended Hillyer College. After a lengthy and varied career as a salesman, he worked as a crossing guard for the West Hartford school system during the early years of his retirement. A man of remarkable humor, Herb had shtik for every occasion. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of Yiddish and big-band music with his family and friends, taking vacations with his family, and chatting with just about everyone he met. Herb is survived by his loving family, wife, Renee (Glueck) Janow; and children, Joshua Janow and Avery Straw of Reston, VA, Jonathan Janow, of Washington DC, and Jeremy Janow, of Boston, MA. He also leaves his sister, Elaine Feldman of West Hartford, brother and sister in-law, Marvin and Roseann Janow of West Hartford, and many caring nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family extends a heart felt thank you to the many doctors, nurses and aides who provided caring medical attention. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating.
