Ida

(Sack)

Levy

Obituary

Ida Levy, 92 of West Hartford, CT passed away December 18, 2020 from complications due to Covid-19. Born in Vienna, Austria on April 10, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Chaim and Anna Sack. She was the widow of Henry Levy. Ida is survived by her children: daughter Esther Tafrizi and husband Shmuel of Brooklyn, NY, her son Joseph Levy and wife Helayne of Venice, CA and daughter Ann McCarthy and husband Kevin of Westbrook, CT. Ida also leaves 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Besides her parents Chaim and Anna and her husband, Henry, Ida was also predeceased by her brother Max Sack. The remainder of her family perished in the Holocaust. Ida’s childhood was cut short beginning when she was ten years old. At that time, she and her family fled Vienna, Austria after witnessing the horrific Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. Fleeing to Thessaloniki Greece her family was then imprisoned by the Nazis. She survived the Holocaust and met Henry, her husband of 65 years after they were liberated in 1945 from Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz Concentration Camps. They were married in Greece and immigrated to the United States in 1951 where Henry and Ida sought new opportunities that enabled them to successfully “rebuild from the ashes” in the Survivor community of West Hartford, CT. As a war refugee, Ida was denied a formal advanced education, but learned to speak 6 languages and was an accomplished homemaker and partner in her husband’s businesses. Having experienced hunger and starvation, she welcomed all to her home and would not allow anyone visiting to go without a meal and her famous Greek cookies. Ida and Henry worked tirelessly to promote education and awareness of the Holocaust throughout their lives in the USA. Despite the events that occurred to Ida early in her life, she was able to have many loving and happy years with her family and friends. Ida and Henry spent most of their life in CT, but also enjoyed spending several years in Boynton Beach, Florida. After Henry had passed away in 2012, Ida moved back to CT to be closer to her family. Due to the pandemic, there are no public funeral services. Shiva and services to be scheduled via zoom announcement. Burial will take place in Boynton Beach, Florida. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT. Dear Joey and Helayne,
We were so sorry to hear of Ida’s passing. Please accept our condolences. She was a beautiful person. She and Henry endured much in their earlier lives - too much. They came to this country, raised a beautiful family, became a part of their community that they cared for so much, and educated so many along the way. Their legacy is their children, their grandchildren and great grandchildren. May both of their memories be for a blessing.

Dear Joe and Helayne, Josh, Rebecca and Jacob - I'm so sorry for your loss of a mother and grandmother during this stressful season, but it's comforting that she'll be in your hearts forever, along with Henry. A few days before hearing of Ida's passing I had picked up my recently purchased local Greek recipe book and found what I was looking for: Ida's famous cookies (I'm making the Festival Koulourakia) that our family loved when she visited Santa Monica. As a non-Jew I was so honored (along with Fred, a Jew) to be included in the holiday dinners and getting to know Henry and Ida, she always amazed me with her youthful energy and devotion to family. I'll be honoring her when I share her cookies (and her story) to friends this holiday season. May she rest in peace next to Henry. Much Love, Bonnie

So many beautiful memories of so many good times together with Ida and Henry are flooding my heart as I read the beautiful tribute to a great lady, your mother, Ida. When I met my late husband, Tom Yalanis, he introduced me to your warm, welcoming and loving family and their wonderful group of close friends. All of the good times, of course, included Israeli and Greek music and dancing!
Esterina, Joe and Annie, and your families, I hope you find comfort in knowing what a remarkable couple your parents were, how proud they were of all of you, and how much they loved you. I feel privileged to have known both of them. I wish you all the love you need to find peace.
Sending you love, Melanie Yalanis

Dear Esther, Joe and Anne,
I am so saddened by the passing of Ida. Your mom and dad are so much part of my children Joshua and Shira growing up across the street on Lyman Road. They would cross the street saying “going to get cookies at Ida”. Every visit we have together your parents are always part of our conversations. I loved how your father brought humor to everything, how he teased her with much love . For me they were my European parents here in America. I miss them a lot.

Esterina, Joe, Annie and families
I am so saddened to hear of the loss of your mom, grandmother and great grandmother. My wonderful memories of her and your dad will be forever in my heart. From 31 Lyman to Boynton Beach, your mom was an amazing hostess, made everyone welcome as if they were own. She thought me to enjoy okra and of course Ida’s cookies were bar none. May she Rest In Peace with her beloved Henry.

Dearest Joe, Helayne and Family,
I am sorry. We send our deepest condolences. I met your mother in 1978. She made me feel loved and welcomed into her beautiful home. And just like the obit said, she welcomed me and my husband, Gordon, to a loving Seder. She cared for everyone at that table. Mrs. Levy was well loved. Give Mr. Levy a kiss from me. May you Rest In Peace. Love, Marjee & Gordon
