Jack (Jacob) ?”Sonny”? H. Saffer, 83, of Boca Raton, FL and formerly of West Hartford, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton,FL. Born in Hartford, on March 25, 1926, he was the son of the late Oscar and Goldie (Dolgoruck) Saffer. Growing up in Hartford, he graduated from Weaver High School, attended Central CT State University, and graduated from Boston University. He was US Army Veteran of World War II serving in Germany and the Phillipines. He was the owner of Herrup Saffer Tires where he developed longstanding relationships with his many loyal customers over the years. He was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, West Hartford and very active in their Men’s Club. He was a passionate sports fan and enjoyed following his favorite teams. Jack spent many wonderful summers throughout his life on the Connecticut shore. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Cynthia (Lonstein) Saffer; two beloved daughters: Judith Salm and her husband Dr. David Salm of West Hartford, and Jayne Rotter and her husband Chet of West Hartford; and he was Zayda to his favorite “?hobby”?, his five grandchildren: Eric and Justin Salm, Olivia, Aaron and Eli Rotter, and they brought him much ?”naches”?. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Florence (Saffer) Blum, and his beloved aunts: Anna Berman, Bertha Bergen, Sarah Baum and Rema Schuman Cohen. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 25, 2009 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. Interment will follow in the Beth Israel Cemetery, Avon. Shiva will be observed at 34 Brownleigh Road, West Hartford.
