Born in New Haven, he was the son of the late Harry J. And Ida (Cheshensky) Merkin. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut College of Pharmacy and owner of the former Merkin Pharmacy in Hartford. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. Jack was a member of the Emanuel Synagogue of West Hartford, Knights of Pythias, John Hay Lodge, West Hartford Regents, and a 50-year member of the Masons. Besides his beloved wife, he leaves a sister-in-law Evelyn Ertman, a niece Zina Rose Merkin and her husband Robert Milgate of Lexington, KY, a nephew James Merkin of New York, NY, and several cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Marshal Merkin.

Funeral services will be held TODAY, Friday, August 26, 2011 at 12:00 Noon in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford with Rabbi David J. Small officiating. Interment will follow in the John Hay Memorial Park, Hartford.
A memorial period will be observed at his home, 48 Northbrook Dr., West Hartford, today, following the funeral until 5 pm, and on Sunday 1-5 pm.
