Joan D. (Yaffa) Segal, 60 years of age, of Norwich, CT, died peacefully from breast cancer on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of Charles and Sylvia (Sachs) Yaffa, of West Hartford. A graduate of University of Connecticut with a B.A. in the school of education, she also earned a law degree from Qunnipiac University School of Law, where she began law school, full-time, at age 50. A member of the Connecticut Bar, Joan practiced law for several years with the office of Attorney Jeremy Booty. Joan contributed her time and energy to many organizations. A lifetime member of Hadassah, Joan was also a member of the Beth Jacob Community Synagogue of Norwich and the synagogue Sisterhood. Over the years, she worked with the Jewish Federation of Southeastern Connecticut, where she once served as the social editor of the Jewish Leader, and lent her energies to Jewish Family Services, and was a member of the Women?s Division of the Jewish Federation. With a lifelong passion for reading and literacy, Joan served on the board for Otis Library, Norwich, where she also served on the executive board committee for ?Evening with an Author? for Otis Library. Joan was also a member of the Weekly Readers Book Club, where she enjoyed sharing her love of literature. Besides her parents, she leaves her husband, Dr. Howard B. Segal; her son: Adam Segal; her daughter: Lori Segal;and a host of loving family and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Sanctuary of Beth Jacob Synagogue, 400 New London Turnpike, Norwich, with Rabbi Charles L. Arian officiating. Interment will follow in Beth David Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. Shiva will be observed at her home.
