Kathryn Shapiro Rubin passed away unexpectedly on Monday April 17, 2017. She was born on January 29, 1933 in Hartford, CT to Joseph and Mollie Sack Shapiro. Kathy graduated from Dana Hall and Wellesley College, where she made many life-long friends. She was formerly married to Alan Rubin. Kathy worked as a newspaper reporter and teacher before obtaining an MSW from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. She worked as a school social worker for over 20 years at the Regional Occupational Training Center in Manchester, where she advocated for many children. Kathy was a creative person from the time her beloved “Clara” taught her to sew as a child – always sewing, weaving, making jewelry, and quilting. After her retirement she volunteered many hours at the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center, where her talents were greatly appreciated. She loved all of the people she met and worked with there. Kathy was a life-long reader and traveler, to her last days. Kathy is survived by her daughters Ann Rubin and her husband Jeffrey Kaufman of Woodbridge, CT and Alice Rubin of Lebanon, CT, and by the granddaughters she loved dearly, Rachel and Sarah Kaufman. She shared many wonderful years with them, baking cookies, doing art projects, spending time at the beach, and being part of their milestones. She loved the sea, and it was most fitting that she enjoyed a trip to the Gulf of Mexico with her family the week before her death. She is also survived by her nieces and her sister in law, and by the extended Kaufman family, who welcomed her with open arms. She was predeceased by her brother, Benjamin.
