Leonard Greenberg, 89, of Boynton Beach, FL, and Nantucket, MA, formally of West Hartford , CT. A man of towering strength and commitment, Leonard leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Phyllis (Spivack), his children Ilene Greenberg (Michael Maynard) of Chestnut Hill MA and Robert Greenberg of Coral Springs FL. Additionally, Leonard is survived by his brother Arnold and wife Beverly of West Hartford, CT, his brother in law and sister in law Charles and Ann Spivack of Sun City FL, seven grandchildren— Lauren, Jamie, Rebecca, Liana, Maya, Kirstie and Joshua, and four great grandchildren Hunter, Jordan, Ace, and Liam. Leonard also leaves behind a special aunt, Estelle Horwitz, Stephanie Owitz, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Leonard’s careers in business and real estate development include Coleco industries that created the Cabbage Patch doll and other toys. He enjoyed an equally successful second career as a real estate developer of the Indian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach, FL, and other resort and real estate projects in southern and central Florida. For Leonard, in addition to family, philanthropy and community participation defined his life. He was a proud 1948 graduate of Trinity College, serving as a trustee for nearly 20 years and later received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. At the College, he was a founding member of the first Hillel on campus and endowed the Leonard E. Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life-a center that has timely relevance in today’s political climate. He also earned a masters degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
In his later years, Leonard held leadership roles in the American Jewish Committee and AIPAC, and was a founding member of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. In addition, he was deeply involved with the Donna Klein Jewish Academy.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in the Chapel of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., West Hartford, CT with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in the Beth El Temple Cemetery, 51 Jackson St., Avon, CT. Immediately following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at Beth El Temple.
