Libby

(Rednick)

Lehrer

Obituary

Libby Lehrer, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend left this world on Oct. 31, 2014 at the age of 82. She was born on Aug. 7, 1932, the only child of Anna and Lewis Rednick. Her family lived their early years in Philadelphia and New York City, then eventually settled in Hartford, CT, where Libby attended Weaver High School. She was an avid reader and wrote a student column for the Hartford Courant. After high school she briefly attended Teacher’s College of Connecticut, then held various secretarial positions. In 1956 she married Leo Lehrer and together with mutual love and devotion, they raised their three children Beth, Danny, and Dina. The family moved from Connecticut to southern New Jersey for Leo’s work and they remained there for many years. In that time, many important friendships were formed, while old friendships continued to be nurtured. Libby spent many years working at a bookstore in Haddonfield, NJ – a job that brought her much satisfaction. Throughout her life Libby prioritized family and friends. Those close to her felt the ease and pleasure of being in her presence and received the gifts of her kind, caring and undemanding love. Her sense of humor and ability to laugh at life and herself was not only entertaining, but a reminder to hold certain things more lightly. Things that mattered deeply to Libby during her lifetime include her immediate and extended family, friends, reading, food (and expressing her strong opinions about it) and her Jewish identity. Libby also loved to sing, had a lovely voice, and a knack for coming up with the right song at the right moment. Some years after her husband Leo died, Libby relocated to Linden Ponds in Hingham, MA to be near her son Danny. He provided daily support and love. Libby leaves a legacy of unwavering love, generosity and smiles in the hearts of her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Beth (Russ) Passamano and two grandchildren Leighayna (Chaz) and Julia of NJ, and son Daniel Lehrer (Jody) and granddaughter Bobby and friend Abby Levine, and daughter Bella of MA, and daughter Dina Lehrer (Eric Small) and grandsons Asher and Leo of VT. Libby was predeceased by her husband Leo in 1997. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Betsy Holmgren for the years of care and companionship that she provided to Libby and to the staff at Rose Court for their warm, professional and compassionate care this final year. Funeral arrangements are being made by Weinstein Mortuary of Hartford, CT. Funeral services at John Hay Memorial Park, Garden St., Hartford at 1:00 pm on Monday, November 3, 2014. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to either RIF (Reading is Fundamental) or Mazon (a Jewish response to hunger).
