APTER, Louis Apter, of Manchester, passed away peacefully at his home February 23 surrounded by his loving family. He was one month shy of his 98th birthday. For 60 years he was president and chairman of the board of Regal Men’s Shop in downtown Manchester. At one time, Regal’s was one of the largest independent men’s stores in Connecticut. Lou became known as “The Marvel of Main Street” for his success in retailing.
Louis is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Gladys (Peck) Apter. He was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Sadye (Cohen) Apter. He is also survived by his son Bernie and wife Sue of Manchester; his daughter Marlene Kittredge and husband George of Longmeadow, MA; his step-daughter Marjorie Peck Gussak and husband David of Manchester. He also leaves his grandchildren Ronald Apter and his wife Carrie Berman of West Hartford, Beth Apter Gold and husband Jim of Scarsdale, NY, Wendy Kittredge Schnierow and her husband Gary of New York City, Bonnie Kittredge Morrissey and her husband Scott of Sudbury, MA, Michael and Julie Kittredge of Tampa, FL, Deborah Gussak Arenberg and her husband John of Warwick, RI, Andrea Gussak of Glastonbury, Lisa Gussak Roy and her husband Tim of Worcester, MA, Nancy Gussak of Manchester, Jon and Tina Peck of Waterford, CT, Paul and Lisa Peck of South Yarmouth, ME, and Dana Peck and her husband Rod Underwood of Portland, OR. He also leaves 17 great grandchildren who fondly referred to him as Papa Lou-Lou. The family is deeply appreciative of the loving care Lou received from Grace, Bernadine and Ann Marie. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 10:30 AM atTemple Beth Sholom, 400 East Middle Turnpike, Manchester with Rabbi Richard Plavin officiating. Interment will follow in Temple Beth Sholom Memorial Park, Manchester. A memorial period will be observed at his home 27 Gerard Street, Manchester, Tuesday following the funeral and Wednesday afternoon and evening.
