Former Bloomfield resident Louis Irwin Mendelsohn, 81, passed away on Saturday March 12, 2011 at Boca Raton Community Hospital in Boca Raton, FL after a brief illness.
Mr. Mendelsohn was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 21, 1929 to Dr. Abraham J. and Esther (Gutowitz) Mendelsohn. He graduated from James Madison High School in 1945 and Brooklyn College in 1949. He received a M.S. (Education) from Yale University in 1951. He served in the USAF from 1952 to 1954, primarily in Alabama, where he attained the rank of Captain.
After military discharge Mr. Mendelsohn moved to Hartford to work as an underwriter at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. While there he met Kathleen Mitchell, to whom he was married in 1958, and to whom he remained a devoted husband throughout his life. He worked at Connecticut General and successor companies for 32 years, retiring in 1986 as a senior vice-president of investment operations. He relished his career in investment management and continued as an active professional manager after his formal retirement.
In recent years Mr. Mendelsohn divided his time between Connecticut, Florida, and Vermont. He enjoyed golf and tennis, but truly valued time spent with family and friends. His family offers that he lived his life with integrity, generosity, warm-heartedness, and in the end, bravery that was an inspiration to them all.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Boca Raton, FL; daughter Carrie, son-in-law Larry, and grandson Joey of Ashburn, VA; and son Eric, daughter-in-law Diana, and granddaughters Sarah and Leah of Salisbury.
A memorial service was held with friends and family near his Florida home. The funeral will be held on Tuesday March 22, 2011 at 12:00 pm at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave in Hartford, with burial at Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery in Avon.
