Marc (Marcus) Granow, age 87, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family in Hartford, on Sunday, January 19, 2014. He lived a long, full, and joyous life for which he was extremely grateful. Marc was born July 12, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, to Louis and Rose Granow. He graduated from Straubenmuller Textile High School and received an Associate’s Degree from Hillyer College (now University of Hartford). Marc served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 in Europe following World War II. He remains a dedicated supporter of veteran organizations including the Disabled American Veterans Organization, Wounded Warrior Project and Fisher House. On June 26, 1955, he married Rose Zaretsky who became his devoted wife. They joined together to raise a large and loving family. Marc was the youngest child of five with four older vibrant sisters. He grew up in Brooklyn and lost his father when he was 13 which meant he became the man of the family. After returning from his service in the Army, he moved to Hartford, Connecticut for his profession of a textile salesman. He was extremely successful in a long career for Angelica Uniforms until retiring in 1994. Marc set many performance records and was a legend in his company and the industry. Marc was a member of several synagogues where his family participated and worshipped, most recently B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom in Bloomfield. He was a lifelong supporter of the Greater Hartford Jewish Federation, as well as other Jewish and Israeli causes. He treasured his decades of activity as a recreational member of the Men’s Club at the Mandell Jewish Community Center. He was a passionate fan and student of jazz music and joyously looked forward to and attended each Hall High Pops and Jazz show in West Hartford annually from 1972 until 2013. He was blessed to be able to watch six of his children and grandchildren participate and perform. Marc and Rose greatly enjoyed dancing in many styles and would regularly capture the attention of the crowd at events such as weddings, bar mitzvahs and dance clubs. Marc was a loyal fan of men’s and women’s UCONN basketball for decades which he enjoyed greatly with his wife Rose and four children, who are each proud UCONN graduates. Marc enjoyed football and was a lifelong New York Giants fan. He will be especially remembered for his adoring family and broad network of friends. He was a gifted communicator, able to speak to each and every individual and make them feel important and at ease. Marc had a manner that lightened even the most serious discussions and he used his quick wit and sharp sense of humor generously.
Marc leaves behind his devoted wife Rose, his children: son Les and his wife Deborah, son Robert and his wife Nanci, daughter Shari Cantor and her husband Michael, daughter Judy Naamat and her husband Haim; fifteen adoring grandchildren: Leora, Esther, Joshua, Jeremy, Avigail, Sam, Noah, Amanda, Ariela, Benjamin, Meir, Nina, Ilana, Jacob, Talia; and five precious great-grandchildren: Noa, Aryeh, Shlomo, Eliana, and Bella. Marc was preceded in passing by his sisters Kay, Frieda, Gail and Sylvia.
Services will be held at 11:00, Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, Connecticut. Burial will be at Hartford Mutual Society, East Granby, Connecticut. Relatives and friends are welcome at the home of Shari and Michael Cantor, 39 Colony Rd., West Hartford, Connecticut, 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 21 through Thursday, January 23, 2014.
