Marshall David Kalin (75) passed away at Saint Mary’s Hospital on Saturday, November 26, 2022. Marshall was born on December 28, 1946 in Hartford to the late Adelaide (Kaplan) Kalin and the late Jarvis Kalin. He was the loving husband of Edith (Edie) Kalin.
He graduated from Conard High School in West Hartford and from the University of Hartford with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Marshall and Edie were married on February 15, 1976 and made their home in Waterbury. He retired from Hartford Electric Supply Company (HESCO) after being there 34 years as a computer programmer analyst.
Marshall was a member of the Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford for all of his life. He served as an usher until 10 years ago.
Marshall was a member for more than 60 years of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) and was serving as Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of CT I.O.O.F. He first started his journey in the I.O.O.F. when he joined Metropolitan Junior Lodge in 1959. When he was old enough, he joined Jonathan Lodge No.66 and was a Past Grand of that lodge. At the time of his death, he was a member of: Nosahogan Lodge No. 21 where he served as Secretary of his lodge; Ansantawae Encampment No. 20 where he served as Scribe; Canton T. R. Martin Patriarchs Militant No. 8 where he served as Clerk and had the rank of Major General; Winona Rebekah Lodge No. 8; Associate Member of Mercy Rebekah Lodge No. 7; Secretary of the Thomas C. Hollis Crusaders. He served as Department Commander of the Patriarchs Militant of CT in 1977 and 1978. He was very proud to serve on the Board of Directors at Fairview, The Odd Fellows Home of CT and had been serving since the beginning of 1975 and was a Life Corporator of Fairview since 1990. He received the Fairview Medal Award in 2016 for his service and dedication. Marshall received the Grand Decoration of Chivalry which is the highest award to be received in the Odd Fellows.Marshall enjoyed watching UCONN Women’s Basketball, Home Improvement shows and cooking shows. He loved to write programs in Access Database. He and Edie enjoyed going on trips especially to the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
Besides Edie, his loving wife of 46 years, he is survived by his sister Sharon Parkman and her husband James Parkman (New York); two nieces – Caryn (Parkman) Burroughs and her husband Eric Burroughs (California) and Lori Parkman (New York); Grand Nephew Jackson Burroughs (California); his Aunts Rhoda Kaplan (West Hartford) and Rita Kaplan (Massachusetts); and several cousins. Edie would like to thank Drs. Jega, Dr. Gniadek, Dr. Chowdhury and Dr. Phatak for the care they gave him over the years and all the doctors, nursing staff and respiratory therapists at Saint Mary’s Hospital for the exceptional care they gave him these past couple of weeks. Funeral services will be held at Weinstein Mortuary 640 Farmington Ave, Hartford, CT on Tuesday, November 29th at 1:30 pm. An Odd Fellow Service will be performed at 1:15 pm. Burial will follow at Jonathan Welfare Society Cemetery, Tower Ave in Hartford, CT
