Martin Aaron

Schulz

Obituary

Martin Aaron Schulz, 95, of West Hartford, formerly of Plainville, died on February 13, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Martin was the son of the late Adele and Pinchas Schulz and the brother of the late Leah and Moshe Schulz, all of Moschitz, Poland (now Ukraine). Martin was the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust. After fleeing from his family home at age 13, Martin went to Germany where he hid his Jewish identity from the Nazis and worked as a laborer in industry and farming. After spending several years in a displaced persons’ camp following the war, he immigrated to Hartford in 1949 where he worked a variety of jobs before he was drafted into the US Army and served as part of the allied occupation force in Germany during the Korean War. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Hartford where he met and married his beloved wife of 53 years, the late Judith N. (Lovitz) Schulz. They settled in Plainville where they raised their family. During the 70’s and 80’s, Martin was the owner of the Sew-Rite Sewing Machine Company with stores in Bristol, Plainville and New Britain. Martin worked for Michael’s Jewelers at their Westfarms and Avon stores from the 90’s into the early 2000’s. Marty’s social life centered around the synagogues he attended with Judy, first in Bristol, then in New Britain and finally in West Hartford. Marty was a warm and friendly man who was sensitive to the needs of others. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans and Beth El Temple of West Hartford and its Men’s Club. Martin is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Upton of Canton and Laura Rosenberg and her husband John of Avon and a son, Philip Schulz and his wife Lonni of Simsbury. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Benjamin Levy and his wife Heather of Milford; Rebecca Schulz and her husband David Gabay of Bethesda, MD; Jonathan Schulz of Boston, MA; Bradley and Max Rosenberg of Avon; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Emma Levy of Milford. The family is grateful to the staff of the Hoffman Summerwood Community of West Hartford and the Oncology Department of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center of Hartford. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 16, at 1pm in the sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, CT with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Internment will follow at the Beth El Temple Cemetery, 51 Jackson St. (off Arch St.), Avon. Memorial periods will be observed at the home of his daughter, 23 Northington Dr., Avon, following the funeral on Thursday afternoon; Sunday, February 19, at 7pm at the home of his son, 23 Woodhaven Dr., Simsbury; and on Monday, February 20, at 530 pm in the Levine-Shein Chapel of Beth El Temple, West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to Beth El Temple of West Hartford. Please feel encouraged to share words of memory in the guest book below.

We were so sad to hear of Martin's passing. He showed such courage in the way he survived the war, and then later fought as part of the U.S. army. What a beautiful life he made for himself!
He was warm, outgoing and cheerful, with a quick wit. It was a pleasure to share services at Beth El and lunch camaraderie with him. May his loving family find strength in their wonderful memories at this time of great sorrow.
With sincere sympathy,
Henry and Linda Cohn

Cheryl, Philip and Laura,
My condolences on the loss of your father. The fab foursome are now together again! I will always remember your dad helping me pick out my first sewing machine and then years later fixing it when I had issues. Pretty sure he helped me out at Michael's Jeweler's too. Such a kind, thoughtful man. He will be missed.

To Marty's Family ,
I was overcome with sadness when I read Marty's Obituary. I thought he was so brave surviving the horrible Holocaust and what he went through. I fondly remember Shabbat Kiddushes when my late husband Joey and I used to sit with Marty and he shares his experiences in Europe and Joey shared his parents plight to escape Europe.

Dear Schulz Family,
I am so saddened to learn about Marty's passing. I was a friend of Judy's from UConn Law School and we shared many lunches together as well as manned the Beth El Judaica shop together after we both retired. Marty was a true gentleman - always kind and friendly when we saw each other at the Temple.
My thoughts and hearts are with you all at this difficult time.
