NOSSAL, Mildred (Nahum) Nossal, age 99, of West Hartford, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Hartford, Hospital. All who knew Mildred Nossal would agree that she was a most exceptional individual. Despite failing health during the past two years her mind remained sharp and inquisitive to the end. She was always ready to offer advice and wise council (or, simply to listen sympathetically) to her friends and family, especially her children and grand children. She loved music, the theatre, and, anything cultural. In her earlier years, she was fond of travel and continued to go on trips abroad until late 70s. She could discuss a play, movie or political event which had taken place the weak or the year before with considerable insightfulness. She was more than just a mother to her children; she was a friend who was always there to listen sympathetically to their troubles and complaints. She is survived by two sons, Peter Carlson of Hartford, CT and Toby Carlson of State College, PA; two grand children, Diane Carlson of Berkeley, CA and Joel Carlson of Eagan, MN; and one great grand daughter, Sheherazade who lives in Paris, France. Mildred was born in Hartford on December 29, 1907 and married Benjamin Carlson (now deceased) in 1934. She attended New Britain Normal School, where she received a teaching certificate before she was married. She later graduated Smith College in 1953, after which she received her MS at Mt. Holyoke College in the field of remedial reading. During the 1940s and 1959s Mildred Nossal served as substitute teacher in the Northampton, MA, school system and later taught remedial reading in Northampton. In 1969 she married Frederick Nossal of Brooklyn, NY (now deceased), where she resided for several years before moving with her husband to Hartford, CT. Mildred will be sorely missed by the many people who knew and loved her and especially by her two children in whose lives a great void has been created by her death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 11:00 am at the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor?s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
