Shlien

Obituary

Morris Shlien, age 92, died peacefully on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Hyman and Rose Weiss Shlien. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School, and after graduating began working for G. Fox and Co. in Hartford. In 1942, he joined the Armed Services and was eventually promoted to Master Sergeant. He served in the 390th Bomb Group and was stationed in England for most of World War II. After the war, he returned to G. Fox and became head buyer for the Toy Dept. In 1955, he founded the Toy Chest in West Hartford Center and ran the business successfully for over 40 years until his retirement. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elinor, his son Robert and daughter-in-law Emmeline Wexer, his two grandchildren Rebecca and Daniel, and his two sisters, Elizabeth and Beatrice. He was predeceased by his daughter, Robin. Morris was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and was devoted to his family and friends. Besides his success as a businessman, he enjoyed other interests including a love of music. He played several instruments and composed music as well. He had a terrific sense of humor and wit and always enjoyed a good laugh. He was a life long member of Beth El Temple, West Hartford and Tumblebrook Country Club, Bloomfield. He will be missed by all his family and friends who loved him dearly. A graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 6th at 1:30 PM in the Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon, with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
