Morton Lewis Shechtman, 78, son of Hana and George Shechtman, passed away on June 5, 2011. A native of Hartford, CT, Mort graduated from Trinity College in 1954 and attended the University of Chicago Law School the following year. Mort had a gregarious personality, which led to his successful career as a salesman and owner of Shechtman Motors, an automotive dealership in East Hartford, founded by his grandfather, Lewis Shechtman. Mort selflessly volunteered his time and expertise at Federation, The Beth El Temple Men’s Club, The Regents, and the Alumni Association at Trinity College, as well as the Board of the Connecticut Opera. He was also active in the Greater Hartford Open, and was a self-proclaimed duffer. In 2008, Mort was a recipient of the Keeper of the Flame Award from Beth El Temple Men’s Club. Mort was an avid reader and was the family poet. He loved opera and travel. Mort derived his greatest happiness from his wife of 52 years, Susan Spring Shechtman; their daughters Vicki and Cathy; their son-in-law Sam Kirschner; and his three delights, Paley, Jonathan, and Daniel. Mort is also survived by his sister, Joy Shechtman Mankoff and Roland Mankoff, Janis and Michael Spring; and his nephews and nieces as well as great nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, (June 7, 2011), 2 p.m. at the Weinstein Mortuary and the burial will be held at Beth Israel Cemetery in Hartford, CT. The family will receive Wednesday, from 1-4:30 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Trinity College as well as the Men’s Club at Beth El Temple in West Hartford.
