Muriel Brown Martin, aged 95, died peacefully Saturday evening at her home in Tiverton, RI after a short illness. Marty was born April 19, 1914 in Rockville, the daughter of Morris Brown and Bertha Eisenberg Brown, both immigrants from Eastern Europe. She was raised in Rockville above the family dry goods store. A 1936 graduate in economics from the University of Connecticut, she was married in 1939 to Dr. Edward Martin, whom she met the first week of her freshman year in college. She lived most of her married life in New Britain where she raised her three children. For the last fifteen years she has resided in Rhode Island, first in Warren and more recently in Tiverton. She was active in a number of organizations, devoting most of her time to Jewish activities including Temple B’nai Israel in New Britain where, among other activities, she served as President of its Board of Education and as a member of the its Board of Trustees. She was devoted to Hadassah and its activities her entire life serving in a number of capacities including Treasurer and editor of the newsletter for the Connecticut Region and a number of times as President of the New Britain Chapter. She will be remembered as a person of intelligence, decisiveness, and warmth, extremely organized and efficient in anything she undertook. With her husband she travelled widely seeing all of America and most of the world. She was interested in everybody and everything and seemed to remember everything and everybody she met. She is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Edward, her children Steven (Lynn Blankfort) of Mill Valley, CA, Margo Grodsky of Boston, and Jeffrey (Barbara Gee) of Portsmouth, RI and by her grandchildren Lisa and Jason Grodsky, Mather, Samara, and Danya Martin. The graveside funeral will be held Tuesday, 12 p.m. at Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Ellington. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the home of Jeffrey Martin, 728 Bristol Ferry Road, Portsmouth, RI.
