STEINBERG, Paula (Sable) Steinberg, 72 years of age, of West Hartford, widow of Gerald Steinberg, died peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2009. Born in New Britain, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Alice (Baggish) Sable, and resided in West Hartford most of her life. She attended Hall High School and the University of Connecticut. Paula worked as a volunteer on political campaigns for John F. Kennedy, Abraham Ribicoff, Ella Grasso and George McGovern and went on to work as Assistant to Senator Abraham Ribicoff from 1974-1981. Paula?s philanthropy and leadership in the Jewish community were substantial. She served as the first woman President and General Campaign Chair of The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford, as Chair of the Board of Visitors of The Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford, and was and a member of The United Jewish Communities Women?s National Philanthropy Board. Paula was the founding chair of the Mandell Jewish Community Center?s Jewish Book Festival and served on the United Jewish Communities Task Force on Federation Relations and Service Delivery. Paula was the recipient of the United Jewish Communities? Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award, given by the Lion Of Judah, the President?s Award and the Bernard M. Waldman Campaign Award from the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford and The Outstanding Leadership Award from the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center. Most recently, Paula was the recipient of the prestigious Stanley M. Kessler Award, presented to her by Beth El Temple, of which she was a member. Paula served on countless committees and boards for the Jewish community on both local and national levels. Partnerships with Jewish communities took her to Israel 21 times and to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Odessa, Lithuania, Belarus, Uzbekistan, France, Norway, Argentina, Cuba, and Poland. Paula is survived by her three children, Jeffrey Steinberg and his wife Deborah of Farmington, Debra Katz and her husband Gary of West Hartford, and Lisa Steinberg-Derasse and her husband Dominic of Norwood, NJ; her brother, Joel Sable and his wife Kyle of Manchester; and her nine grandchildren, Louis Steinberg, Sarah Steinberg, Alex Steinberg, Bessie Steinberg, Tate Steinberg, Jessica Katz, Hana Katz, Daniel Derasse, and Meg Derasse. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 1:30 PM in the Sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon. Shiva will be observed through Wednesday evening at her home, 272 Westmont, West Hartford.
