He is survived by his wife, Joan Gitlin Sherman of Alexandria, a brother and sister-in-law Dr. William and Samantha Sherman of West Hartford and a sister Susan Sherman of Newington.
Funeral services, conducted by Rabbi Howard Herman, will be graveside at the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield on Thursday October 25 at 11 a.m., with full military honors. Shiva will be at 7 pm on Thursday at the home of Dr. William and Samantha Sherman, 14 Old Brook Rd. in West Hartford
The family extends its thanks to Richard’s care team of many years – Fatima Sheriff, Hawa Kamara, Josephine Kamara, Victoria Konadu, Memuna Soumah and Hayford Asante.

Dear Joni,
We are so sorry to hear about Dick. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Unfortunately we won't be able to come to his funeral because we are leaving for Florida tomorrow for a week. I will call you soon.
