Roslyne

((Eisenberg))

Rosenfield Maslan

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Roslyne (Eisenberg) Rosenfield Maslan, age 90, of West Hartford, CT, on Saturday, September 17, 2016. She was predeceased by her second husband, Dr. Frank Maslan, as well as her first husband, Robert Morris Rosenfield. Roslyne was born on February 15, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Samuel and Minnie (Barkin) Eisenberg. Her family relocated to Connecticut when she was 16 years old. She earned her B.S. in economics from the University of Connecticut at Storrs and began working in the law department at Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company in Hartford as a paralegal while she attended the University of Connecticut School of Law. In 1950 she postponed her legal education to raise her family. Her first husband, Robert, passed away in 1970 at the age of 50 during the time when Roslyne was attending the UConn School of Law. She earned her J.D. in 1971 and returned to work at Phoenix Mutual where she served as the company’s first woman lawyer, specializing in group insurance and real estate law. She became an officer of the corporation and advanced to the title of Counsel. Roslyne earned her CLU designation (Chartered Life Underwriter) in 1975. Actively engaged in her community, Roslyne performed pro bono legal work and served as a trustee and corporator at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. She became involved in lobbying for AARP and worked with Connecticut legislators. Roslyne was married for nearly 38 years to Dr. Frank Maslan until his recent passing in June 2016. Together, Roslyne and Frank enjoyed a full life of travel, art, attending auctions, antiquing, auditing many classes at local universities, and living at their retirement community – The McAuley in West Hartford. She also spearheaded an investment club for women and, as an avid reader, enthusiastically participated in a book club with her friends. Roslyne is blessed to be survived by her loving family: Stephen Rosenfield (Cheryl) and their children, Andrea Rosenfield and Eric Rosenfield all of West Hartford, CT; Samuel Rosenfield (Ruth) of Avon, CT and Phoenix, AZ and their children Rachael Adger (Kevin) of Tucson, AZ, Robert Rosenfield (Julia) of Avon, CT, and Joseph Rosenfield (Stacey) of Queen Creek, AZ; Matthew Rosenfield of West Hartford, CT; and David Rosenfield of West Hartford, CT. In addition, Roslyne leaves behind four great grandchildren. The Rosenfield family wishes to express sincere thanks to the nursing staff and caregivers at Hughes Health & Rehabilitation in West Hartford as well as Masonicare Hospice for their dedication and compassionate care. The kindness, warmth and support you offered to our beloved Roslyne during her final days were truly a blessing; we value and appreciate the exceptional care and services you provided and are profoundly grateful. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford with interment at Beth El Cemetery, 51 Jackson Street, Avon, CT. Immediately following interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at Beth El Temple in West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117 or to a charity of the donor’s choice . The West Hartford Investment Partners and the book club that spun off of it, were and are a very important to me. I learned so much from Ronnie and cherished her friendship. We had a few wonderful lunches with Ann Isbister and Diana MacPherson at the McCauley- she was still a voracious reader. I visited her at Hughes and we laughed together over silly things that had happened in our 21 years of investing and reading together. I am writing this through tears, I will miss her.

Your Mom was a great lady and super neighbor.

From the time I joined the Phoenix Law Department in 1983, Ronnie was a source of inspiration and a role model. With never a negative word about anyone, Ronnie always exuded a positive view of life despite the adversities she had already faced and continued to experience. While at Phoenix, she served as a sounding board and cheerleader for many of the younger females in the department who were trying to juggle career and young families in an environment not always welcome, at least in the 70s and 80s, to female professionals. If she could maintain her good cheer, how could any of us cave in to stress and discouragement? I missed her cheerful demeanor, generosity and wisdom when she retired. I will miss her(and those attributes)even more now, especially since Anne Isbister and I had planned to visit her on Wednesday (now, the day of the service). She will live on in my memory and in the memories of her many friends, clients and colleagues.
