Sara “Sooky” Theodore Greenberg, of West Hartford, whose common sense, fashion sense and sense of humor sustained her for more than 100 years, died Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Hebrew Health Care in West Hartford, at age 101.
Sooky was a wise and loving mother to two daughters: Carole G. Goldberg (Robert) of West Hartford and Phyllis J. Pagano (Marcello) of West Newton, Mass. She was a wonderful grandmother who loved sharing memories and advice with Jonathan D. Goldberg of Dorchester, Mass., Jeffrey D. Goldberg (Susan Dellio) of Quincy, Mass., John-Paul Pagano of Brooklyn, New York and Marisa L. Pagano of Brookline, Mass.
Sooky was born in New York City on October 10, 1910 to Karl and Alice Kroos Theodore and grew up in Hartford. She was predeceased by five brothers: Benjamin, Joseph, Julius, Harry and Samuel, and by three sisters: Mollie, Minnie and Libby.
She graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1928 and was one of the last surviving members of her class. As a young woman, she worked for Travelers Insurance Co. and later as a saleswoman for local dress shops, including The Gilded Cage in Bloomfield and Modern Woman and the Florence Travis shop in West Hartford Center.
Applauded in high school as a talented dancer, she married George M. Greenberg in 1933. They traveled the country during the 1930s when he played trumpet with various big bands, including the Will Osborne Orchestra and Raymond Scott band. He later played with the WTIC radio Merry Madcaps and led his own dance band in Hartford. He died in 1968.
Her funeral will be Monday, December 19, 2011 at 12:00 noon in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, followed by a private burial at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford. Friends are invited to share memories of Sooky on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home of her daughter Carole, 20 Lemay St., West Hartford.
