Scott

Bernstein

Obituary

Scott Bernstein, M.D., age 60, of West Hartford, died after a long illness on April 28, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Palmbaum Bernstein and beloved father of Dr. Megan Bernstein (husband Scott Katz) of Andover, MA and Julie Bernstein of New York. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Special thanks to our many neighbors and friends who went the extra mile to help us get through this very challenging period in our lives, and especially Scott’s care givers (you know who you are). Before his illness, he was a proud and devoted physician at Hartford Hospital, working with patients in his office, the hospital, and in the dialysis and transplant programs. He was loved by so many patients and families, and received thousands of letters upon his untimely retirement. His funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, April 29, 2013 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow at Beth El Temple Cemetery, Jackson St. Ext., Avon. Mourners may pay their respects at the family’s home following the burial. Shiva will be observed at the family’s home through Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to Hartford Hospital’s Dialysis and Transplant Fund for the benefit of patients, families, and nursing education, or to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. Hi Nancy - we were colleagues years ago when I was the planner at the UConn health Center. I remember our group lunches when we would all share ideas, problems, stories, etc. of our work at the respective hospitals. And I remember hearing of Scott.I'm so very sorry to read of his death. While it's been years since we knew each other, my deepest sympathy is with you and your family.I trust that you have lots of love and support surrounding you and your daughters. With care, Anne

Dear Nancy and Family: How very saddened I was to hear of Dr. Bernsteins passing. I remember when he visited my husband in the hospital...what a great man !! I know that this time is difficult but know too that he is now with our Lord and that he smiles down on you all.

I remember Scott as a great colleague during my days with Kaiser Permanente. He was our "go to guy" on not only renal and electrolyte issues, but on all issues that related to critical care. He was also a leader in the establishment of a "hospitalist" program for us, well before that term became popular. Most of all, I remember his and Nancy's wonderful hospitality inviting me to dinner at their home when I first moved to Hartford, ahead of my family. That welcome meant so much to me. I think of it very often. That gesture of reaching out has served me over the years as role model of how to make someone feel truly welcomed. Bob Laskowski

Nancy: we are very sorry but know that you did everything possible to help Scott and that nothing could have been done to reverse his far too early passing. May he rest in peace! You must be content in the fact that you made all the best decisions to support him completely throughout his illness. Also our very best to you, Megan and Julie. Be well; be peaceful!

Dr Bernstein was my doctor for many years. He took such good care of me. When he went into his own practice he took me along as a patient, he helped prepare my husband and I when I was in need of a kidney transplant. He will be greatly missed.

I am a physician at Hartfored hospital and knew Scott through interactions over patient care. I used to run into him in the hallways at the end of the day and we would either chat about patiens or nonmdeical issues. I haven't seen him in many years but remember being very fond of him. I thought he was a very good and caring physician. He was very personable and I always enjoyed his time.
My are prayers are with him and his family.
