Sheila

((Hammer))

Cohen

Obituary

Sheila (Hammer) Cohen, 88 years of age, of Sandy Springs, GA, formerly of W. Hartford, CT and Miami, FL, passed away on Monday, August 27, 2018. She was the beloved wife of the late Morris Cohen. Born in Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Frances (Cantor) Hammer. Sheila graduated from the Cornell School of Nursing in 1953 and worked for a short time afterwards at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC before moving to Miami immediately after her wedding. While in Florida, she worked per diem nursing positions while raising her family and then started what would comprise the rest of her career; as an instructor for the practical nurse program for Broward County Schools. Along the way, she completed a Master of Science degree in Health Occupations Education. She spent 22 years at Sheridan Vocational Center until her retirement and then continued teaching part-time at McFatter Vocational Center. Beloved by students for her dedication and patience, Sheila continued teaching until the age of 83. One of her favorite stories that she told was that one of her students complained she was walking too fast during clinical rotations (at the ripe old age of 82). When Sheila wasn’t at work, she could be found enjoying a good book or playing Scrabble (and usually winning). Sheila is survived by her sons, Joseph Cohen of Atlanta, GA, Louis Cohen and his wife, Pimchan, of Thousand Oaks, CA and David Cohen of New Rochelle, NY; her daughter, Natalie Raven and her husband, Michael, of Atlanta, GA; her beloved grandchildren, Sara Raven, Rachel Raven, Charli Cohen, Josh Cohen, Benjamin Cohen, Amanda Cohen, Matthew Cohen, Aaron Cohen and Lea Cohen and 3 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Sheila was predeceased by her sister Gladys Dobrutsky and her brother, Judge Harry Hammer. Funeral services will take place at 10:00 am on Friday, September 7, 2018 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT with Rabbi Debra Cantor officiating. Interment will follow in the Knesseth Israel Cemetery, 123 Maple Street, Ellington, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Broward Education Foundation or Doctors Without Borders. For my Aunt Sheila, who stood next to me while I got stitches when I was little and gashed my head open, who helped me know myself better, who guided me as I entered nursing, and gave me strength as my own Mom slipped away.

For the Cohen children, I can only begin to imagine your sorrow and grieve beside you.

To all our "cousins" the Cohen children, my brother Harvey and I send our condolences. Aunt Sheila was the last of the group of 4 that included your dad and our parents, who knew each other as lifelong friends. Our childhood memories are too expansive to recount, but your mom was such a comfort during the time our parents passed away. May her memories bring joy and comfort to you during this difficult time.

As a childhood friend of David's, I regret that I can't be physically present to share your grief today. But please know that, as a 14 year old, I bore witness to your mom's caring and love. She was a formidable adversary in my quest to lure David into, shall we say, unsanctioned activities. What more can we ask of our parents- that they simply care about us and love us more than anything else in the world. And that, she did. My condolences to the Cohen family.
