Shirley

((Sowalsky))

Brody

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Shirley Sowalsky Brody, 93, of West Hartford, CT, wife of the late Bernard William (Bill) Brody, on August 11, 2016. She was born on September 15, 1922, in Hartford, CT. Shirley was raised in Hartford and attended its fine public schools, graduating from Weaver High School in 1940. She married Bill in 1945 after he returned from military service and lived most of her life in West Hartford, raising her family along with our dad. Mom was a wonderful cook and a lifelong volunteer, serving as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, in support of Hadassah, and as a devoted volunteer for Hospice patients and their families. Shirley and Bill traveled extensively until Bill’s passing in 1994. Shirley continued to travel for several years and spent winters in Florida until very recently. Mom was blessed with a sharp mind right up until the end. She was an avid reader and a very active resident of Summerwood, attending the in-house movies; events at the Bushnell, Theater Works, and other local venues; and befriending legions of Summerwood residents. She is survived by her three children: David Brody and his wife Joanne Liegner of Andover Township, NJ; Caren Brody Peters and her husband Larry Peters of Boston, MA; and Paul Brody and his wife Linda Sabatelli of Mansfield, CT. Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her seven grandchildren: Melissa Keller and her husband Jeremy; Danielle Dean and her husband Patrick; Matthew Brody; Jake Peters; Jessica Peters; Nicolas Brody and his wife Rebecca Kreston; and Kim Brody Hart and her husband Will Hart. Shirley was also blessed to see four great grandchildren come into this world: Lily Hart; and Maya, Ari and Caleb Keller. She is also survived by her in laws: Dave and Shirley Brody and Clara Sowalsky; and many nieces and nephews and their many children. Shirley was predeceased by her brother Meyer Sowalsky and her sisters Rose Nemeroff and Minnie Goldfarb. We are grateful for and appreciative of the dedicated caregivers at Summerwood and Hebrew Healthcare who contributed greatly to making Shirley’s later years so joyful. Rabbi Ilana Garber will officiate at the funeral service for Shirley to be held at the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT on August 15, 2017, at 11:00 AM, followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford. Afterwards, family and friends are invited to join us at Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue in West Hartford, to share food and connect with fond memories of Shirley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Youth Volunteer Fund, The Hospital at Hebrew Healthcare, 1 Abrahms Boulevard, West Hartford, CT 06117, attention Ruthan Wein; or the Rabbi’s Fund at Beth El Temple. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT.
