Gray

Obituary

Stephen Gray, 77, of Avon, died peacefully at his home on October 27, 2012. Father of Jeffrey and Lowell; grandfather of Rebecca, Samantha, Josephine, and Alexandra; brother of Frances Archipenko Gray; beloved partner of Laura Harris. Stephen was born in Manhattan and graduated from Stuyvesant High School and Syracuse University. After serving in the Army, he lived in New York where he owned a printing business. He loved skiing, cooking, traveling, reading, and collecting decorative arts from the American Arts and Crafts period at the turn of the last century. His collecting passion resulted in research, teaching, publishing, mentoring and a major exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in 2008. In 2011, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the annual Arts and Crafts Conference. A private graveside funeral will be held in Valhalla, NY. Arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford. A memorial reception will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wadsworth Atheneum.

We count Stephen as one of our close friends, even though we didn't see each other often. He was a great mentor, and we'll miss his sage advice.
