Sylvia A. Moore, a long- time resident of New Britain and Clinton, Connecticut and Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away on July 14 in Lantana, Florida. She was married to the late Hyman L. Moore for nearly 60 years. She was the daughter of Maurice and Ada Axelrod, also of New Britain.
Sylvia loved literature and poetry, and many years after receiving her B.A. from Central Connecticut State College she returned to academia to earn her Masters in English from Wesleyan University. She went on to become a teacher of English at New Britain High School and devoted herself tirelessly to passing on her love of literature to her students.
An active volunteer in the New Britain Jewish community, Sylvia was a member of Temple B’nai Israel since her childhood, a president of the local chapter of Hadassah, and a leader in the New Britain (now Greater Hartford) Jewish Federation.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter Betsy Moore Joseph, Betsy’s husband Vincent Joseph, her daughter Sara Moore Litt, and Sara’s husband Andrew Litt; her grandchildren, Jennifer Joseph and Jennifer’s husband Adam Winik, Michael Joseph, David Litt, and Rebecca Litt; and her great grandchildren, Max and Rose Winik.
The funeral will be held at Weinstein Mortuary in Hartford at 11 00 A.M. on Sunday, July 17, with interment at Beth Alom Cemetery in New Britain.
Sylvia was a strong, outspoken, and independent woman long before that was the norm. A lifelong supporter of women’s rights, in her 89 years she saw many improvements in the opportunities open to women. One milestone she was looking forward to is the first woman being elected President of the United States. Though, sadly, she will miss this historic election, contributions in Sylvia’s memory can be made to the Hillary Victory Fund through this dedicated link: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/finance/?raiser=2436750.
