Sylvia

Schloss

Obituary

Sylvia Klein Schloss of West Hartford, 101 years of age, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2019. She was the wife of the late Benjamin Schloss and the daughter of the late Isaac E. Klein and Rose H. Klein. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Nachtigal, her son in law Mark Nachtigal, her grandson Benjamin Nachtigal, and her step-grandchildren Joshua and Danielle Nachtigal. She was predeceased by her sister Helen Rothbardt, her two brothers Earle and Ralph Klein, and her step granddaughter Lee Nachtigal.

At age 75, after her husband’s passing, Sylvia began traveling extensively, including a 99 day cruise around the world. She had a keen card sense and was an avid bridge player. In addition to selling Israel bonds, she was a long time member of the Emanuel Synagogue, the Emanuel Sisterhood, an active life member of Hadassah, and a member of ORT, a global education network driven by Jewish values. Sylvia was asked to speak at various ORT meetings regarding her visit to an ORT school in India.

Sylvia began her working career in G. Fox & Company in downtown Hartford, and was then employed by the State of Connecticut. For many years she managed a family owned commercial property, negotiating leases, initiating property improvements, and promptly responding to tenants’ requests. She worked side by side with her husband Ben in his business, Industrial Uniform Company.

Sylvia endeared herself to all who knew her. She was known to her friends and family as very warm and considerate, always putting others first. She had a remarkable memory and would always inquire about siblings, children and family members by name. As one family member put it “She was always so kind and classy. Really a treasure to know.”

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 6, at 11:00am in the Chapel of the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford. Interment will follow at the Emanuel Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield. Shiva will be observed on Wednesday and Thursday at the home of her daughter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Macular Degeneration Foundation at macular.org or to the Emanuel Synagogue Art Fund.
