Thelma (Lutin) Gold, 88 of West Hartford, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, the widow of Seymour Gold, died on Friday, November 22nd in the comfort of her home. Born in Hartford, the daughter of Samuel and Dora (Kaplan) Lutin, Thelma was a life-long resident of the area. She attended local schools, graduating from Weaver High School where she met her husband Seymour who she married on November 22, 1947. She attended Hillyer College (University of Hartford) before receiving her nursing degree from Beth Israel Hospital (Boston), and practiced in Boston before returning to Hartford where she was a pediatric nurse at the former McCook Hospital. She is widely remembered as the nurse at Hall High School in West Hartford for over 18 years before her retirement in 1987. During her tenure as the school nurse Thelma befriended both students and teachers. She was a life member of Hadassah and Jewish Family Services. In retirement Thelma was an avid knitter, where she took great enjoyment from making hats for UConn Hospital NECU patients and blankets for family and friends. In addition, she volunteered as a reader to inner city students for whom she also knitted hats. Devoted to her family, particularly enjoying the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Thelma also looked forward to spending summers at the Connecticut shore. In recent years she took great pleasure in her weekly mah jong games. Together with her beloved husband Seymour, who predeceased her on November 22, 1984, Thelma was a founding member of Beth El Temple in West Hartford. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sandy and Marc Friedman of Bloomfield and son and daughter-in-law Mark and Ellen Gold of Longmeadow, MA, her four adored grandchildren Scott (Amy) Friedman, Amy (Matthew) Perlman, Eric (Chau) Gold and Daniel (Esti) Gold, and eight precious great-grandchildren: Alex, Ben, Sophie, Sam, Zooey, Ezra, Shylie and Eitan. She is also survived by her loving sister Bernice Ellis and several nieces and nephews. Thelma will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 25th in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford at 11:00 a.m. The family will begin a period of mourning at Beth El Temple following interment. Shiva will be observed from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Monday and Tuesday at Thelma’s home. Memorial donations in Thelma’s name can be made to the American Heart Association , Beth El Temple of West Hartford, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
