Sack

Obituary

Thelma (Rush) Sack, 98, of West Hartford, widow of Dr. Kenneth C. Sack, died Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at home. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Born in Philadelphia, PA on April 26, 1918 she was the daughter of Julius and Diana Rush. Thelma was raised in Philadelphia, lived in West Hartford for 65 years, and spent many summers with her family at Middle Beach in Westbrook, CT. Thelma met the love of her life, Kenny, when he was attending Temple Dental School in Philadelphia. They married on August 8, 1943, lived in Texas while Kenny was in the army, and moved to West Hartford in 1951 where they raised three loving and devoted children, Judy, Margie and Gerry. Until recently, Thelma wintered in Pompano Beach, FL. Thelma was a skilled card player enjoying both bridge and poker. She took no prisoners when playing her favorite card game, spite and malice. She could solve any crossword puzzle, was an avid reader, and cherished every moment she could spend with her family. Upon moving to West Hartford, Thelma and Kenny became members of Congregation Beth Israel. They were founding members of Cliffside Country Club and later Thelma became a member of Tumblebrook Country Club. Thelma is survived by her daughter, Judith Sagat and her husband Kenneth, of Briarcliff Manor, NY, her daughter, Marjorie Winnick and her husband Jeffrey, of South Windsor, CT, and her son, Gerald Sack and his wife Susan, of Bloomfield, CT, seven grandchildren, Jonathan Winnick and his wife Christine, Julie Nicholson and her husband William, Mark Sagat and his wife Kerri, Andrew Sagat and his wife Elizabeth, Rebecca Rush, Amanda Tavares and her husband Ricardo, and Julianna Wattley, and twelve great grandchildren, Sara, Noah, Leah, Preston, Ethan, Sari, Lila, Hannah, Ella, Annie, Shelby and Nora. She also leaves her nephew, Dr. Thomas Rush, and niece, Eleanor Rush. She was predeceased by her brother, Bernard Rush, and her sister, Clare Rush. Funeral services will take place in the main sanctuary of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford on Friday, November 25, 2016 at 2:00 PM with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. Shiva will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the home of Gerald Sack; on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 6:30-8:30 PM at the home of Marjorie Winnick; and on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 6:30-8:30 PM at the home of Judith Sagat. The family is grateful to the staff of Hamilton Heights and Thelma’s caregivers for treating her with such love, kindness and dignity. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Congregation Beth Israel or a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT. Reading Thelma's obituary, I am sorry that I never had the opportunity to meet her, but ironically my connection with some members of her family brings back such incredible memories. I was a teacher in Briarcliff Manor for many years, and was fortunate to know the Sagat family. Judy and Ken stand out in my memory as very devoted and loving parents. Their two boys, Mark and Andrew., were excellent students and and a pleasure to get to know. Recently I had the opportunity to meet Gerry Sack and he filled me in on the lives of Mark and Andrew. Thelma Sack had a tremendous influence on so many people. May her memory be a blessing.
