Schloss, MD

Obituary

Walter Amson Schloss, MD, passed away on August 24th, 2014 at the age of 99, just 6 weeks short of his 100th birthday. He was married to Ruth Schloss for 72 years. Walter was born in New York City on October 15th, 1914, son of the late Irving and Martha Schloss. Growing up in Flushing, NY, Walter took pride in being an Eagle Scout. An Amherst College graduate, Class of 1936, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Schloss received his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine, and practiced as a Urologist for many years in Hartford. He served as a Major in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army during WWII. Dr. Schloss is survived by six children (and spouse): Nancy Marks (Mark), Jane Phelan (Garrett), Wendy Benger (Craig), Peggy Mendelson (Alan), Andrew Schloss (Irene), and Barbara Schloss. He leaves eight grand-children and eight great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Stanley, and his sister, Frances. Dr. Schloss was an avid skier up to the age of 94, winning many medals for racing in his age category. He also enjoyed swimming, reading, and loved repairing anything that needed fixing. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 26th, at 1:45pm, at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Avenue, West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Walter’s love of education, memorial contributions may be made to Amherst College or to NYU School of Medicine. Shiva will be observed at the home of his daughter, Peggy, from 5:00pm to 9pm, on Tuesday, August 26th. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.

Dear Peggy and Wendy: Sorry to read about your Dad. He was very nice to my older brother and played a role in him becoming a physician.

We first met Walter and Ruth walking their dog who came to eat our fallen crab apples. They were always very active and wonderful neighbors and took an interest in our children, then just toddlers. Walter and Ruth were always so kind to call on a hot muggy day and tell us "The pool is open", and we admited Ruth's gardens, ate grapes and talked to Walter about asthma pharmacology. Our children thought of Walter and Ruth as special friends and they are sad to hear that Walter passed on this week. We haven't seen them as much due to our own again parents but we keep Dr. Walker in our hearts and memories. We know the sadness of loss and the knowledge that any pain for Walter has evaporated with his passing into the universe.
