Walter Amson Schloss, MD, passed away on August 24th, 2014 at the age of 99, just 6 weeks short of his 100th birthday. He was married to Ruth Schloss for 72 years. Walter was born in New York City on October 15th, 1914, son of the late Irving and Martha Schloss. Growing up in Flushing, NY, Walter took pride in being an Eagle Scout. An Amherst College graduate, Class of 1936, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Schloss received his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine, and practiced as a Urologist for many years in Hartford. He served as a Major in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army during WWII. Dr. Schloss is survived by six children (and spouse): Nancy Marks (Mark), Jane Phelan (Garrett), Wendy Benger (Craig), Peggy Mendelson (Alan), Andrew Schloss (Irene), and Barbara Schloss. He leaves eight grand-children and eight great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Stanley, and his sister, Frances. Dr. Schloss was an avid skier up to the age of 94, winning many medals for racing in his age category. He also enjoyed swimming, reading, and loved repairing anything that needed fixing. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 26th, at 1:45pm, at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Avenue, West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Walter’s love of education, memorial contributions may be made to Amherst College or to NYU School of Medicine. Shiva will be observed at the home of his daughter, Peggy, from 5:00pm to 9pm, on Tuesday, August 26th. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
